Please USA win. Can't think of anything worse than Jamaica qualifying.

    Freaking lol @ SA though.
"The South African team chose to stick to local talent for the qualifiers, resisting the inclusion of eleven eligible players who play in the ranks of the NRL and European Super League.

“I think a little bit of experience could have helped us, maybe we could have used some of our professional players. In the end, scrappy game, disappointed. I don’t think any coach would be happy with a loss. I think we’ve learned a lot out of the game and I think our support back home will back us using local players,” van Zyl said. “Our boys are fully amateur, they will go back on Friday and end up back in South Africa on Sunday and everyone will go back to their day jobs.”"

What idiots. I can see the benefits of using local players but a couple of Professional players would have helped them.

They aren't that bad. They've only played 5 internationals though.

They've lost 2 times to the USA and once against Canada and have picked up wins over Canada and South Africa. They're biggest loss has only been 37-22 against the USA. Would definitely prefer the USA but would much rather Jamaica in the RLWC over sides like South Africa, Serbia, Russia etc.

Serbia up 2 spots over Italy and Lebanon? Surely this was done before the latest Euro qualifying matches?

Poor international league, got a looong way to go.

I think it was great that they used local players.

The USA have defeated Jamaica to qualify for the Rugby League World Cup 2013. Also, Italy have defeated Serbia to set up what is effectively an elimination match against Lebanon on the 29th. The winner goes through to the World Cup, the loser is out. Russia and Serbia will play each other also with the winner finishing 3rd in the Euro Qualifying event.

    Carn' Italy.

  11. RyanG R Gee

Vic Mauro was also sin binned in the 66th minute in the Italy vs Serbia match, Serbia apparently had all the territory and possession after the sin-binning but couldn't cross the line, even with the 1-man advantage.

What a joke, they clearly both deserve to be in, guarantee there's some teams worse than Lebanon that make it.

  13. RyanG R Gee

Yeah, I disagree with the top 12 ranked teams being automatic inclusions because there's not enough international matches outside the big 3 to have a ranking system that truly reflects the strength of different nations.
Would have liked to have seen something like this:

    Automatic Qualifiers:
    Australia
    New Zealand
    England
    France
    Papua New Guinea
    Samoa

Pacific Islands Qualifiers (Round Robin, top 2 qualify):
    Tonga
    Fiji
    Cook Islands

Euro Qualifiers A (Round Robin, Top 2 qualify):
    Lebanon
    Italy
    Russia
    Serbia

Euro Qualifiers B (Round Robin, Top 2 qualify):
    Ireland
    Scotland
    Czech Republic
    Germany

Atlantic Qualifiers (Round Robin, Top 2 qualify):
    USA
    Canada
    Jamaica
    South Africa

Something like that would've been decent. I'm a bit of a gluten for wanting more internationals though :p

The problem with making too many of these teams qualify is that their best players are often away for NRL/ESL reasons during the qualifiers. If Wales played a qualifier in the middle of the ESL season they'd be fucked. Furthermore, the RLIF desperately wants the lesser nations that play in the World Cup to have a bit of recongnisable star quality and upset potential, so if you just found the nations with the best domestic competitions it might not match up to the ones that the most NRL/ESL players could throw their hats in with come World Cup time.

  15. RyanG R Gee

In regards to NRL/ESL duties they could play the qualifiers the 1 or 2 years before the WC during the NRL/ESL off-season. I see your point though. There needs to be more proper internationals for the lesser nations (stating the obvious).

  16. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah. As I've said before, I'd use Origin weekends (which I'd remove NRL games from) as an opportunity to showcase some of that. Tonga, Samoa, Fiji and PNG in particular could play a round robin over the three Origin weeks, with all NRL and Toyota Cup players available. That's three games on each Origin weekend already and you could add in a standalone Under 20s Origin match and a match from NZ (Auckland v Wellington+South Island maybe?) to take it to five. The weekend of league doesn't look sparse, suddenly.

It'd be great to get the northern hemisphere involved too so the players could be released from the ESL where necessary but I don't reckon England would be too interested in stopping their competition to play three Tests against Wales or France. The best you could hope for would be three matches against the Exiles, defeating the purpose of it anyway.

    Group A
    ENGLAND
    AUSTRALIA
    FIJI
    IRELAND

    Group B
    NEW ZEALAND
    FRANCE
    PAPUA NEW GUINEA
    SAMOA

    Group C
    SCOTLAND
    TONGA
    EUROPEAN QUALIFIER (Lebonon/Italy)

    Group D
    WALES
    COOK ISLANDS
    USA

    Group C and D teams play one cross group game as follows;
    SCOTLAND V USA
    TONGA V COOK ISLANDS
    WALES V EUROPEAN QUALIFIER

The top 3 teams from both Group A and B progress along with the winners of Group C and D to the quarter-finals.

USA have fallen into a favourable group. Wales should still be too strong though.

I'd say the teams that will advance out of the pool stages would be:
    Australia
    England
    Fiji
    NZ
    France
    PNG
Italy (I reckon they'll beat Lebanon)
    Wales

  18. Cribbage RG Cribb

Fiji v Ireland will be a cracker. So much riding on it.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

Gotta lol @ you putting in tips for specific matches that aren't played for another two years though. :p
