City really are so so bad without Kompany. I don't think there is any other player who is more important to their side in the PL than him. City's form makes ours so much more frustrating - if we'd have won our last 3 games in the league (Norwich, Bournemouth and West Ham) we'd be 2nd and 6 points clear of City atm
AWTA so much. Kompany is the without a doubt the single most important player for a team in the PL right now. Followed by guys like Smalling, Ozil, Mahrez, Vardy, Silva and a few others
I think it's Özil personally as without him absolutely everything would have to change for Arsenal. City's issue isn't that Kompany is away per se but that Yaya has absolutely no interest in defending in transition once City lose the ball in an attacking position. At times its a 4-1-4-1, but with A CM and AMs rather than a holder. Gives so much space for the opposition to exploit
Not sure what's going on with Yaya, he looks sluggish and lazy and he was that way for the first 80 minutes or so in this game too and then suddenly turned it on. Too little too late. Great goal though. Özil definitely up there, he's incredible.
Just don't think that Mangala and Otamendi have that understanding or confidence in each other. If either one of them are paired up with Kompany then it makes a huge difference. Mangala and Kompany were perfectly fine at the start of the season, now he looks like a completely different player with Otamendi next to him. He looks lost in most games. So perhaps his importance also stems from the fact that he makes the people around him better. They just look better defending as a unit when he's present. It's not his individual brilliance per se making those goal saving blocks or last ditch challenges
Yeah Kompany's extremely overrated and pretty average as an individual player but his leadership and command from the back are no doubt invaluable.
Agree with everything you guys said below about Kompany and our defence. Mangala tends to make bad decisions too often, except when Kompany is there since he "controls" him a bit. Otamendi was stellar for me last night in a losing performance. Walcott's goal was a brilliant finish sure, but Sagna should have been there to pressure him a bit more tbh. Giroud's goal was just good play by Arsenal to build it up and again I think Otamendi did all he could in a losing battle there after he was left alone at the back by Mangala who shot up in the defence again and was clueless, again. Also agree on the Yaya comments - he does absolutely NOTHING for 80mins, then scores a gob smacker of a goal and proceeds to play amazing football for 10mins. Wtf of a mentality is that!? And while I am venting - that fucking Bony! I just can't like him. He is not industrious enough to ever be in the right place to score goals. He loiters around the box or thereabouts and expects for the ball to be placed at his feet with an open goal ahead and then still proceeds to fuck it up somehow. Navas' break last night is the perfect example: He breaks clear then looks to play the striker in front of goal, but there is no Bony because he did not anticipate the break and wasn't quick enough to respond and get in the box. Aguero would have been there. He really needs to work harder to justify his pay check. Rant over.
Whilst talking about influential players - shawcross at stoke has similiar stats to kompany. i totally agree with droos, i thought otamendi was brilliant last night. He made a couple of class last ditch tackles. Its mangala who is the donkey. Pellegrini got it badly wrong last night. Delph was a terrible decision. Sterling was atrpcious when he came on and navas is just shit. City need an overhaul. also, bellerin has to be the best right back in the prem right now. Awesome display
Bellerin was genuinely good. There really are some guys in amazing form atm when you think about the likes of Ozil, Mahrez, Barkley, Alli, De Bruyne, Vardy etc and even guys like Wijnaldum and Arnautovic who flies under the radar a bit because their teams aren't performing as well over all. I am really enjoying the topsy-turvy nature of the league this season.
