All of that is true. He fits into the Rabbitohs really well and excels in the role that he is given. When you have a certain set of skills that your team needs and certain deficiencies that your teammates cover then it makes a lot of sense to just remain within your comfort zone. The only issue is when people decide that Reynolds is a really good halfback overall, when in fact he is just a really good fit for the Rabbitohs.

Walsh couldn't defend half as well as Reynolds, he isn't as good a goal kicker and I don't believe it is beyond Reynolds to develop a decent running game.

Yeah Reynolds has good footwork and he does occasionally go himself and I think he's becoming more confident about when to go himself as his game has become more polished. The fact he can easily become pigeonholed as a distributor can provide sneaky opportunities and he's got good toe for a 7.

reynolds gets a shitload of traffic ran at him too, he made like 32 or 33 tackles against the warriors, which was 2nd highest for the whole side after mcqueen with 34 iirc.

You're scraping the barrel if you're comparing defence and goal-kicking as a half tbh.

In addition, I'm not convinced of the possibility of Reynold's developing much of a running game. I'd believe it if he had shown himself to be a decent ball-runner at lower levels; however, even when he was playing in the NYC he wasn't particularly strong with ball in hand. He'd rarely take the line on and would only run the ball 3-4 times a game, much like he does right now in the NRL. It isn't that easy to develop a good running game and you're essentially banking on him developing an area of his game that he has never really possessed.

I think at best you'd be looking at him developing a running game akin to Luke Walsh's, which isn't what I would call "decent".

Walsh has a fantastic running game when used.

  7. Magic AJ Parker

Luke Walsh doesn't have a running game.

I do actually wonder if he's just scared of getting tackled, is it possible for a First Grader to be scared of getting tackled?

Have you seen his tats? He aint scared of nuffin.

He definitely became a ball-player/organising half because he was worried about getting hammered IMO. He is the antithesis of Kieran Foran.

    Reynolds is a shittier Sherwin.

And Pearce is a shittier Gower.

    Walsh is uh...shittier Kimmorley?

I don't really agree with this.

Walsh rarely runs the ball because he's not very good at it, and when he does run the ball it's effective because he runs so little that the defence overcomits to his passing game. It's a trap I used to fall into - I always wanted him to run more - but I actually think his running game would be even less effective if he did. It might help his passing game out a bit but Walsh is able to look as dangerous when he runs as he does because he runs so little and catches the defence unaware when he does.

I think the little amount he runs is a reflection of the fact that he's aware of all that and not him actually being scared of getting tackled.

I actually don't think Reynolds fits Souths structure that well. He fits the role but he doesn't excel at it because he is technically deficient. His service is often terrible because he simply lacks in the department of basic passing skills. I've lost count of how many dud passes he's thrown between the Charity Shield and the first five rounds. And his running game is virtually non-existent. He makes what 14m a game?

And funnily enough that's exactly what I used to do when I played at school and it worked, as long as you Foran it to the line and get whopped before you pass a few times.

Yeah he really needs to step it up and grow some balls and challenge the line like the elite halves of the competition.

Who here said Pearce had a good running game?

Also lol @ some of your stats, even I don't need to find the stats to know you've done some pretty creative accountancy work there...

I think I covered everything to do with attacking the line and the flow on effects it has in attack. Granted I didn't list kicks or defence but I didn't think that's what this discussion was about.

And I wasn't meaning to have a direct dig at you, more just the fact that Walsh is so scrutinised for his running game (or lack there of) when his stats are near that of the current NSW half, despite playing in a much weaker less successful side.
