Mbye is a significantly less retarded selection than Milford but yeah he's just not very good in general. They should've just picked a proper second hooker given minor reshuffles cover the spine and threequarters well.

  2. AVA T Delonge

Yeah with Morgan at centre and Hunt at hooker, you have pretty much every spot covered outside props/second row as long as you have a backup hooker. That being said, Granville was the only other viable hooker option, so it's kind of a shit go either way.

  3. Cribbage RG Cribb

Yeah but above all else you do need a second hooker if you're going to play Hunt there for most of the game. Hard to ask someone who doesn't usually play there to defend in the middle for 80 minutes.

I'd have started Granville, brought on Hunt after 15-20 minutes and just left him on for the remaining 60-65. Only uses one interchange if no-one gets injured, makes sure Hunt doesn't get too tired, and between Hunt and Morgan being able to shift to the halves and Fifita covering centre they've still got all potential injuries covered. Failing a specialist hooker like that the best option probably was Mbye though (plays 1-7 and 9 all to at least a "fringe first grader" standard, even though he's really not very good at any position, particularly not the one he's going to play (hooker)), which just goes to show how shit their options ended up for that spot after injuries to Friend and McCullough.

Really? I’d have thought NZ and England would supply like 6 players max between them with Taumalolo and Burgess the only real certainties.

I couldn’t start Granville in Origin. He’s just not playing well enough. His service is so poor.

  6. Magic AJ Parker

I'm also factoring in Cam Smith and possibly Cooper Cronk as non eligible.

    Off the top of my head;

Certainties: Burgess, Taumalolo, Taukeiaho, Hodgson, Cam Smith,

Debatables: RTS, DWZ, Rapana, Joey Manu, Tapau, JWH, Bateman, Kikau,

Like I said I haven't give it much thought prior but I'd go something like

    1. Tedesco
    2. Addo-Carr
    3. Mitchell
    4. Manu (1)
    5. Rapana (2)
    6. Munster
    7. Keary
    8. Burgess (3)
    9. Smith (4)
    10. Taukeiaho (5)
    11. Cordner
    12. Harris (6)
    13. Taumalolo (7)

    14. Klemmer
    15. Vaughan
    16. Tapau (8)
    17. Hodgson (9)

So just over half, but I'm sure plenty would debate some of those selections.

I haven't thought about a world side in ages, we should have a separate thread for it IMO.

  8. Cribbage RG Cribb

What would you have done though? The alternative of having Mbye come in at hooker for 15 minutes doesn't really seem like it'd improve the service to me...

From the selected squad? Yeah I’d pick Granville but I’d bench him. He actually would be a sharp threat running the ball so I’d bring him on for 20 minutes, 10 either side of half time. I think you have to start with your best possible side.

  10. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Fuck you’re reaching to prove a point

  11. Magic AJ Parker

    No Oates?

  12. Cribbage RG Cribb

Haha I think the biggest obvious reach is sneaking Hodgson onto the bench. Even if he's a better hooker than Cook - which is debatable in the first place - Cook would be clearly better at that bench role.

  13. Magic AJ Parker

Yeh I thought about that but the argument is around the quality of players, not the quality of the team. So I treated it a bit like an awards team.

If you were picking a bench for a legitimate game you'd definitely be taking Cook and probably a more mobile forward such as Bateman on the bench.

  14. Cribbage RG Cribb

Looking at it this way I'd probably just pick a 1-5 of four fullbacks and Latrell. I'd be half tempted to do it even in a real game.

    1 Ponga
    2 RTS
    3 Tedesco
    4 Mitchell
    5 Turbo

If QLD somehow win this series, it'll be almost up there with 2006 and 1995. I've got a bad feeling Munster will get exposed again.

  17. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Nothing comes close to 1995. Not even 2006. Winning this year wouldn't really be equitable. The NSW side just isn't that good. 95 is the greatest underdog story probably in the history of Australian Rugby League.

  18. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I can't remember any series in which a team had been so preemptively written off by everyone and then turned around and won in a clean sweep as they did in 95. The Lockyer/Smith/Thurston dynasty only won in a clean sweep once.

  19. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I still can’t believe they picked Cleary but dropped Maloney. I don’t know how you begin to justify that.

  20. Alec AD Funkotron

It was only one game, but Cleary seemed far more comfortable without Baloney. He's probably almost finished as a player too, that's probably how they justify that.
