I disagree, in the NRL you can get away with it....not in SOO. I still have visions of Matt Bowen being tossed aside by a rampaging Willie Mason a few years back

    Barba is Bowen MKII.....

  3. Harry Sack SB Slippy

Not to mention Tallis on Hodgson....

I also have visions of Matty Bowen taking an intercept in extra time and winning the game. Most of the great fullbacks have been small dudes, and they played in a time where you really could smash people, not the softened up version we have now.

Especially if you're calling Slater a 'tiny dude'. That rules out most fullbacks in the comp.

Who made more metres than anyone else in origin history, if I remember correctly.

That tackle is also impossible now. Jerseys don't have collars.

  7. Cribbage RG Cribb

And without the collar he actually gets right on the outisde of Tallis (after already beating two others) and streaks down the field.

I agree that there's nothing intrinsically wrong with being a small fullback. Bowen was never a particularly good Origin player but it's not because he was small; it's actually largely because there were a couple of better fullbacks ahead of him during his prime and he got used mainly out of position when he played. I'm not a big Barba fan but you can't just strike a line through his name because he's small.

    At this stage, I'd go:

    1. Hayne
    2. Morris
    3. Jennings
    4. Morris
    5. Ferguson (if he's deregistered...then Gordon)
    6. Carney
    7. Anyone that isn't Pearce
    8. Merrin
    9. Farah
    10. Tamou
    11. Lewis
    12. Bird
    13. Gallen

    14. Gidley
    15. Fifita
    16. Watmough
    17. Hoffman

Don't really want Josh Morris but we lack other options and he hasn't done enough to be dropped. Don't really want Hoffman but he hasn't done enough to be dropped either.

I'd stick with the blokes of this year that had any sort of success.

  9. morgieb MC Burridge

    No Gallen?

  10. Cribbage RG Cribb

Nah Hoffman has definitely been shit enough to get dropped. Pull your head in. He'd be an absolutely despicable bench player too.

  11. morgieb MC Burridge

Graham or Mateo then I suppose. Sutton could come into contention in theory, but he hasn't played in the back row in years.

Hoffman wasn't bad last night though IMO.

  12. Cribbage RG Cribb

He wasn't terrible, no, but he was in the first two games. I think it kind of exemplified why he'll never be much chop at Origin level - for some reason we insisted on giving him the first hit-up of every set that was on his side of the field, even from taps, and he got absolutely belted. When he made the sort of break he often does at club level to score on the left he got brought down by the more aggressive and alert defence you find at this level.

He really had a dig last night. He tried his heart out. And he still wasn't good enough. If we want a second rower willing to take lots of tight hitups (for some reason) then Bird will be much more effective at it than Hoffman, and we want someone to be a threat in left side backline sweeps with lead running (which is really the only reason you would pick Hoffman) then he's basically failed at the task even when really putting in.

  13. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

I didn't......I called Barba a "tiny dude", which he is.

Gasnier's less than a year older than Hodges and actually signed a contract with the Dragons that didn't expire until 2015.

And yet he had a go at Lyon - who he is only 6 months older than - on air about not playing this year.

    Why weren't you playing, Gaz?

  16. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

lol yeah but fullbacks don't take many intercepts. Bowen wasn't playing fullback at the time. Billy was.

  17. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

You can't put a line through his name but even if he and Inglis were exactly equal as players, I'd pick the bigger man because smaller ones do tend to cop it. And starting sets badly can fuck you up royally.

I think the push for Nigel Plum failed because the campaign started too late. So any push for an inclusion in the 2014 team should start now, that way it can build plenty of steam by selection time next year ...

Aw fuck, I just realised that tagline applies equally well to Tyrone Roberts. Going to have to think of something a bit more unique.

  20. Speirz DG Speirs

And more worryingly, that could fit Mitchell Pearce as well.....
