I agree with Frizzed's sentiment - There is a huge difference between bands who played in the 60's and bands who have the 60's sound. The Beatles could work but you'd have to be very careful with your choices - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and I Am The Walrus, yes. Yesterday and Please Please Me, no. Their early stuff sounds too 50's-esque.

Led Zeppelin is an inapt suggestion afaic. For one thing, they don't have the sound - They're extremely heavy for the most part. For another, they started in 1968 and their best, most recognisable music came from the 70's.

You should be looking at individual songs as opposed to bands IMO. It's just not as simple as suggesting a band a throwing on one of their CD's.

Procol Harum - A Whiter Shade Of Pale
    Scott McKenzie - San Francisco
Mamas And Papas - California Dreamin
Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love
Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower, Hey Joe
Simon And Garfunkel - Mrs Robinson
The Doors - Light My Fire
The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
    The Kinks - Lola
The Rolling Stones - Paint It Black, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Angie
    The Who - My Generation
    David Bowie - Space Oddity
Joe Cocker - A Little Help From My Friends

    The Weight - The Band
Salt of the Earth - Rolling Stones
    Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane
Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Gates of Eden - Bob Dylan

EDIT: Oh and also Helpless by Neil Young (although that maybe pushing it as I'm pretty sure that was late 69/early 70.

Helpless was CSNY in 1970. Actually no it wasn't. It was Young and Crazy Horse in 69 but that's the least famous of the three versions.

Thanks for clearing this up, I just felt I had to add some Neil Young in there and that was one of the earliest ones I could remember. Which reminds me, For What it's Worth - Buffalo Springfield.

Feiry I wouldn't ask you to set my ipod up for me so please don't ask me about the 60's.

Errm...when did I ask you about the 60s? And I have an IT degree. So GAGF...(and learn to spell me name ;))

Is this really from the 60's? I always imagined it being a mid to late 70s song.

Released in 1970. Has a very 60's sound though IMO.

Even Come Dancing from (I think) 1981 has a very 60s sound from the Kinks.

Most of my favourite 60s songs have a very 50s sound, I guess. Del Shannon is a legend. As is Lonnie Donegan.

Early Northern Soul/Motown stuff is pretty good for a 60s vibe. There's A Ghost in my House / Gotta See Jane by R. Dean Taylor. I Heard it through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye or many, many more besides. Even Desmond Dekker's Israelites.

Prefer Creedence Clearwater Revival's cover of Heard It Through the Grape Vine, myself.

Jefferson Airplane was such a gun suggestion.

    Think it's 70s but anyway:

Stuck in the Middle With you - Stealers Wheel.

Grace Slick was such a babe. Gun singer as well.

I quite like Creedence, but their version lacks the punch, fire or simply the voice that the Marvin Gaye version has.

Mind you, I'm a sucker for a good slice of Motown.

Musically Gaye's version probably is better, but the rock fan in me will always go to CCR's version. It has a mildly darker feel in my opinion.

Really? I find Gaye's version quite dark, seething and brooding with feeling. I do love Gaye's voice though - it's incredible IMO. But as I say, I like a dose of CCR too - Midnight Special being a particular favourite of mine. Though, they are just like a better version of Sutherland Brothers & Quiver in some ways. :ninja:
