    I posted a Sid Lowe article about release clauses in here a while back. He reckons they're basically informal agreements and in reality it would cost a fortune in taxes and fees to even try to activate them with a hostile bid, and it might not even hold up in court.

    He's on a long contract, they can always ship him out somewhere for a year on loan and hope he likes it.

    It's for eligibility reasons i think. To stop a player helping a team into the CL through qualifying only to be sold and play for another team in the CL proper.

    Nope. You can only play for one club before January and you can't play for 2 clubs in the same competition.
