DCE and Elgey could be a pretty damn sweet halves pairing.

    30/6/2015 etc.

    Hope he does stay though.

Manly apparently only offered him $200k. Would take more than that to drag a guy away tbh.

  4. Tartmaster AJ James

I read they were offering 600k over 2 years

  5. GYR DW Lewis

He has played 5 first grade games he is not worth more than that.

  6. jazman84 JM Eightyfour

I agree with you, I'm not the one trying to poach him though.

If Manly wanted him that bad, they should have offered him more.

They said $200K on the radio this morning, unless Tits offered $100k/season and that was the difference.

Either way, I think it's a good call by him, if he's going to make anything of himself he cant do much better than riding DCE's coat-tails.

With the way the salary cap works and rises and the fact that the standard of average NRL half isn't high, I don't absolutely agree with that.

There are some very ordinary first choice halves but there are deadset no NRL standard playmakers in reserve grade.

Just look at who Souths, Manly, Penrith and Cronulla have used in the halves this year.

With several spots open at certain clubs for next year the remaining available playmaker player pool could absolutely cash in; Hodkinson, Maloney, Cornish, Townsend, Thompson, McCrone, John, Lui and Sandow. (Albert Kelly and Todd Carney)

Just off the top of my head they'll be vying for:

    Manly 6 & 7 + reserve
    Parramatta 7
    Roosters 6
    Warriors 6
    Bulldogs 7
    Cronulla 7 & maybe 6
Tigers, Eels and Panthers will probably be looking to add some security too.

Yeah that's because of the big difference between southern hemisphere and northern hemisphere halves at the moment. "Reserve grade halves" go and play ESL so no-one tends to have any depth unless they have a good crop of youth for a season or two.

Well I think the bigger cap has kept playmakers, and just skilful players in general, in the NRL until they retire as well rather than them cashing in over there from 27 onwards. Which has led to what you're talking about as much as anything for mine. It's why the level of export is far lower than what it used to be, because they don't really trump our pay, but they pay more than reserve grade.

Yeah exactly. Their cap is actually much smaller than ours now.. but starting halves always demand high contracts, so getting contract #2 for a club in Europe pays far more than getting #20 in Oceania. The pay gap between starting and reserve halves is bigger than the pay gap for any other position, and on top of that, 'native' ESL forwards are actually pretty good so they have less need to sign up Aussies for those spots.

on the topic of forwards, I can't believe there are so many plodders like your Jack Buchanans and anybody feel to name a number of shit props that can't do anything.

Like I have no idea what Luke Page is like in defence but I'm sure you go around most gyms and find the most jacked guy you can and he'll run the ball fast enough to make 8m before the defence gets him and then fall forward which is better than a lot of bench forwards.

Obviously it's not that simple but being a decent prop just doesn't seem that hard given you have enough size and the fitness to last like 10-15 minutes twice over 80 minutes.

The hardest cunts to tackle in juniors were those short, fat, hard cunts who were just like a bowling ball. They'd just run as fast as they fucking could and bounce off everything they came into contact with.

Yeah. Just running as hard as you can in general makes you hard to tackle. Shits me when you see these guys going at like half a jog and falling like a cushion.

I think some of this is NRL coaches selecting the best reserve grade starters on the bench as opposed to the best blokes to give you 15 minutes of NRL quality stuff. Buchanan would make a much better reserve grader than Vave for example but a worse NRL benchie.

But most of it is defence tbh. You can't have blokes playing 15 minutes and costing you with two crucial misses. The idea with your worst relief forwards is to have them just kind of hold the game while you give blokes a rest.

Is Kurt Gidley any good? Coming over to Warrington next season, looks a bit old maybe

Was an utter star at his peak. He isn't young though, hence why he's going to England.
