NRL to look at changing shirt numbers
    04 May 2010 - 05:30pm

The NRL will consider a proposal to allow players to have their own individual numbers on the backs of their jerseys.

The idea was put forward at a meeting of club bosses in Sydney on Tuesday by Sydney Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce and was received warmly by the other clubs.

Noyce said it was time rugby league followed the lead of AFL and cricket teams and allowed fans to buy replica shirts with the name and numbers of their favourite player on the back.

'It allows fans to identify with a favourite player when they are at the game and when they purchase a jersey,' Noyce said.

'The way positions are today the numbers do not really reflect where people actually play and there is a better chance for people to better identify their favourite player.

'There are only two sports that retain numbers based on position and it is time we moved on.'

The plan also received tentative support from NRL CEO David Gallop, who admitted although the idea would fly in the face of tradition, it was something that would be looked into.

'All of that stuff is part of the system used in AFL and cricket and there has been a push for it today and we will go away and look at it,' Gallop said.

    Could work.

I'm undecided whether I like it or not tbh. I like having the position numbers on their backs so I know where each player is playing but then from a commercial perspective this could be a good piece of merchandising for clubs like in the EPL with C.Ronaldo when he was at Man Utd wearing Number 7 etc.

  4. Toolman TR Man

    Shit idea.

Hard to say, I prefer the players choosing their own numbers, but it might get confusing for the viewers.....I'll see how it will work before I make a judgement.

  6. Lukic L Popovic

Yeah, might work. Numbers are getting pointless now, we call guys like Gallen, Myles, Lowe etc locks, when they're simply 3rd tight runners in the no.13.

More revenue for clubs at the expense of what... a few fans not liking that number 22 might be starting at fullback?

  8. Alec AD Funkotron

I like when the numbers actually mean something most of the time, like now. Most of the time, you can tell that this asshole is the fullback and what not, even if you've never seen them before or even heard of them. With random numbers, it'll be hard telling random abo A and random abo B apart.

Not sure if I like it but it will bring more money into the game.

don't like it. I don't give a shit about peoples favourite players. Just ave their primary number and its close enough. I don't see how it is going to help the game. I think it would look retarded, keep it the same.

    Kind of indifferent.

    Peter Wallace #7.

  12. Magic AJ Parker

money usually helps the game... strange I know.

  13. 99* JJ Ritchie

If it stops Ben ****ing Rogers disgracing the Newcastle #7 I'm all for it.

Players continually change positions during a game anyways, should have dropped the fixed numbers years ago.

  16. Freddy MJ Johns

    I love the idea.

  17. Julian BJ Taylor

    Shit idea.

I hate that people buy soccer shirts just to have a specific player on the back. Support the club or **** off IMO. The jersey then bevcomes pretty much ****ed when your player leaves the club too.

what about rep selection if three people with 15 are selected who gets to wear it and do the others just have no numbers? How about we allow forward passes as well as AFL, Soccer and NFL are allowed to as well?

The NRL etc. have taken enough tradition and changed the game enough already, soon we won't be able to call it rugby league as it won't resemble the original sport.

  19. Tartmaster AJ James

    You mean Rugby?

  20. Old Mate M Perry

Just keep rep games with the traditional numbers then I guess.
