The Rooney-as-CM ship sailed long ago. At the moment his strengths are his finishing, movement and positional awareness as a CF. Plus, set pieces. His weaknesses are fitness, first touch and passing. His reputation has been lagging behind his ability for some time so we'll probably get a great deal if we do let him go. I don't think Ferguson will without signing a replacement, though.
Yeah, agreed. Jones and Rooney in midfield will be mostly 2 headless chickens chasing around tbh. Both are positionally weak and not best disciplined. Jones is improving but he needs a more assured partner next to him like a Carrick or Scholes.
That's a possibility and the Diamond has worked when played this year. But SAF giving up winger's full time. Dunno.. Those 3 upfront together though. :eee:
Yeah exactly. On the rare occasions that we tried it, the diamond worked for us brilliantly. Sir Alex does love wingers though so he might not try it. Would be awesome if he did though imo.
I still think Rooney's long passing is one of if not the best in our side tbh. I don't see him playing in a 2 man midfield but I can see him doing it in a 3 man with 1 holding. That or employ him on the wing, which has been a weakness for us this season... apart from Young we've not really had anyone do a consistently good job for us
ive always said if i was united manager, i would want rooney as involved as possible and i would play him right slap bang in the middle of the pitch. i think michael carrick would be a great partner for him too tbh
Yeah it's pretty good. He's an inconsistent passer though, has an eye for a great one but also gets a lot of very simple ones wrong. Definitely not good enough to play CM, and that's ignoring the fact that you'd be almost entirely wasting his brilliant movement in the box and finishing. I don't think Ferguson trusts him on the wing anymore. He played him on the right wing against Madrid away, but he did such a poor job defensively that Coentrao had their two best chances and Fergie chose Giggs instead at OT.
Haha I find diamonds hideous to watch, especially when they're just being used as a way of shoehorning as many good central players into the side as possible. No width. There is of course no chance of it happening, Fergie's been signing wingers and refusing to sign any CMs for years.
Yeah it's fucking hideous. I don't think Phil Jones's passing is good enough to play CM either. But I'm fine with him occasionally being used in a "follow the other team's best player around fouling him" role.
Yeah, Jones is actually improving in the CM role. Won't say his passing was really really good though, but improvement certainly.
I like him at CM. He sort of makes us harder to break down and adds a more physical aspect to our midfield. I agree he's not the best passer of the ball, but that isn't really why he's played there.
Well if we get Falcao I think Rooney would be on the move. As for Ronaldo I can see it happening because Nike is going to basically pay for his transer and all that to get him back at OT
