I'm running a cricket world cup sweepstakes at work.

I need options on calculating points for a competition where you just choose who will win each game.

I can't use just 3 points for a win as we'll have more than one winner at the end.

Was looking at using the teams RR x the overs they batted + 10 points for each wicket in hand + 10 points for each wicket taken.

    Any advances on that?

Preferably something that doesn't take all day to sort in Excel.

Wait what? Shouldn't the team that wins the worldcup be the sweepstakes winner?

Yeah just winner of the final for a sweep mate.
Possibly a runner up or podium prize and money back for worst record split by net R.R would be as adventurous as I'd go have fun explaining nett r. R to the females in the office

This is pretty much the standard. Not sure why you'd want to over complicate it, it's more likely to just turn people away imo. Especially if they're not overly interested in the tourne

I want people to choose the winner of each game.

But I don't want 3 points for a win etc etc... I need each game to be worth different amount so people won't end up on the same score.

Might be over complicated but it does give you a clear winner.

We could pick a team each but there's too many people for that to be fair.

So what you actually want is a tipping comp?

Just do one point for group matches, two for quarters, four for semis, eight for final.

    I guess.

Nah we are bound to get more than one on the same score... if I can bring in run rates etc it's more accurate and the chance of two the same is less likely - especially if they can pick one game to double the score on.

Not if tips are secret. There will be an upset or two in the tournament.

It's too complicated. I'd be highly surprised if you ended up with two people on the same amount of points winning given quarters, semis and finals should all be between top 8 sides which will result in upsets, as Julian said.

They aren't secret... all pool play games are submitted before the comp starts.

They get plugged into a spreadsheet that I have to make.

But upsets don't help if people take the popular options. It's plausible two people will even submit the same picks.

But someone will have chosen the upset and they will then be in the lead.

Even if they tie they can split the prize.

Or, they have to choose MotM for the Final or something. Just a small tiebreaker for the Final will be enough to divide any potential winners if the prize cannot be split at all.

    Could just use Superbru.com?

The problem with anything complicated is that it's difficult to tell how well you're doing. With anything like this you just want to know by looking at the result whether it's what you wanted or not, without having to do any maths.

Otherwise you'll lose people to the black box.

Yeah the more complicated you make it, the less likely people are going to give a shit about it ongoing. That's the beauty of a sweepstake, it literally requires you to pull a name out of a hat and that's it

That ones got potential although some know nothing about cricket.

They get updates graphically so they know how they are going... it's only gonna be complicated for me so it's not a major.
