Crabs Conundrum

Seriously, if you haven't read/understood anything of what I've said then fuck off. It's not the Crabs being ahead that's the issue, it's the scale of the difference. Trust me, I know my own sim. The issue isn't today which is why I'm not changing anything for Season 5. This is a season six issue. If you don't want to believe it's an issue, that's fine but you are not going to convince me this is the same as the Spartans over the last 2 seasons as it simply is not the case.

Edit: Plus for the 2nd time in this thread, you won the RRC last year and would have won this year's RRC without breaking a sweat if you'd either signed Somerset (or alternative place kicker) or thought a bit more about your selections (which I admit you and Furball do more so than any other team, but the Olympians had no business winning that match)

This could potentially work, in theory at least. Incentivises being active in the main SR subbie, definitely, which IMO is the way to deal with it.

Active posters in subforums are still active, but the top echelon of players when it comes to activity will be determined by SR forum use.

The question is how to implement it, and whether it would actually work in practice.

100 posts in 2 hours? Automatically best thread on the open forum in the last 9 months.

Anyone have a quick rundown of the SR post counts of the starting XV of each club?

    Yes.

He's not saying 'ZOMG DISBAND THE CRABS NOW'

It's 'The Crabs are already in the position that the Spartans were in at the season's start and, seeing as one club has been becoming increasingly inactive over the last 2 years while one is being filled with bilge, this gap is only going to increase to the point of ludicrousness, what can be done about it.'

You may not yet win the title this season but having you romp every game by 70 besides the Spartans who lose by 35 is just pointless for next season and saying 'it's the dominance our bitching deserves' is nonsensical

Yeah, mid-season breaks really kill the realism. People joining and posting million of times before debuting is fine IMO as long as it's done in the offseason, but mid-season breaks really mess with the way the system(s) work on here. This obviously isn't a criticism of Heef as I've been more guilty of it than him, but it is an issue.

This thread has been a fantastic way to stop me from doing productive uni work, and boost my non-subforum RUSim postcount, ftr.

You are doing the Crabs a great service here, Baxter :ninja:

I think the difference was that the Spartans were just the best run version of the same way all the clubs were run and therefore very easy to theoretically take down, whereas the Crabs are run entirely differently, and there's just no end in sight to their dominance really. They're not going to just lose a few players or have another team over-take them in activity, something that always seemed possible with the Spartans.

It's not so much having a dominant team that's the issue; it's that it's that the gap is just going to grow and a change in the landscape doesn't really seem on the cards. If the Crabs win the next three seasons then great, good on them, but it'd be nice if we didn't already know they would right now.

As I said earlier in the thread, it's a tricky one, because I genuinely believe the Crabs deserve their dominant position going forward. It's just going to make the competition really boring though - more so than the Spartans dominance - so we probably do have to do something about it.

Hey, it's for the good of the forum and the sim as a whole. It's what I'm about.

I'm not asking for the Crabs to post less, I just think more of it should be done outside of the subbie.

    I blame Cribb :ninja:

Yeah it's not an easy issue. On the one hand, one club being super dominant is not good for the competition at all. But if you kick them out, too many I think would just plain not go on CS anymore, and it's not like they're doing anything wrong.

My two solutions I'd propose would be:

    * Two SR teams. They all share the same subforum but they play for two equal sides in FG. More of a short-term solution I guess, but at least it won't mean that they'll win every game by 50 points or something equally ridiculous.
    * Crabs to join other competitions, if possible. Means that the posts are potentially more spread around and their dominance is diminished. Probably a weaker idea but meh.

Marcuss will take one for the team. Heef won't sim without an even number of teams so he'll fold the Spartans for the split to happen.

That's much more reasonable than the guff Baxter is spouting on what should be posted and where.

I think negating post count accumulation during the offseason would fair.

    Other options:

    > Make SR what-makes-someone-good-ishness in line with how CricSim works. Most work but the best option. Then the Rays forum becomes a good example of team success on merit.

    > Disallow subbie posts from contributing at all. The downside here is the extremity, meaning that some players get massively nerfed and end up losing interest. It also hits teams like the Hurricanes hard given they've tried to boost subbie activity for the sake of saving the team, which has been slightly successful.

On the other hand, I'd pay this to avoid getting dragging into shit where people mouth off about what apparantly goes on in other subforums, which has what's really ground my goat today.

    @Heef

What I'm inquiring of is how this bad future is so certain when we haven't really seen the very good post ranks that the Crabs already enjoy translate into sim dominance. If you think that would reveal too much about the sim then alright but I feel you're being less explict than you think you're being.

Yeah, look, I ultimately agree that the Crabs dominating to the point of there being no competition is a fruitless exercise and fun for none involved. Interest would wane even further, it'd make the actual simmage utterly pointless and, long-term, could well kill the sim. The potential for Australia vs Namibia in '03-style results help nobody, and if we started racking up 80+ points in every S6 pre-season trial, then it's bad for everyone.

The Crabs would have no incentive to do anything, and the rest of the sides would have no incentive to improve.

But at the same time, I definitely don't want to see the Crabs shut down and split up.

I think it has to come down to incentivising posting in here and the Rugby Union forum (are those posts counted?), and perhaps putting Escath's suggested upper limit on individual players - or even having a maximum activity level on teams.

"different way of being run" = a topic specific based club basically.

But my "a CW based side shouldn't exist" drum has been worn out since mid way through S5 iirc.

I think the former gives us too much special significance, and would probably cause more burned biscuits in the long run.

The latter probably wouldn't happen for a long time as the only sims that use forums are Cricsim, Soccersim, AFLsim and CribbsimRL, all of which are inactive. I personally think it wouldn't work at all as most Crabs are heavily involved in other clubs and the original subbie would become the de facto Crabs subbie anyway. I also think having the same team in many sims is a bit boring at the best of times.

I hated the Crabs when they only played in the reserves ffs. The accusation I only care now they're good is just baffling.

I'm not quite sure what you're suggesting here.

Well CricSim has a sophisticated and understandably secret way of combining post ranks, activity and past performance. The reason this whole deal is an issue is that the post ranks for SR are more volatile and count for too much.
