I think he's been pretty impressive in defence all series, but I'd agree he hasn't shown very much in attack, although that's not entirely unexpected. If for whatever reason we need to shut a game down in the World Cup, I think Manu and Barritt would be our best pairing to do that, but I think really we need to play Eastmond and Manu.
My two cents and this will come as no surprise ranking of english centres based only on games against us Manu Daylight Daylight Eastmond Barrit Daylight Daylight Daylight Daylight Twelvetrees Daylight Burrell
Big family too. More Daylights than Whitelocks, but at least the Whitelock lads all chose to play in different positions.
What's going on in Samoa in terms of the rugby? Like what's all this solidarity towards them, are they struggling financially?
The players are threatening to strike due to their under-funded union being unable to pay them. The RFU will get 100% of the revenue from the Twickenham match in a system that is a relic of the ameteur era. The idea is that visiting teams get compensated by later hosting return fixtures, but of course none of the top sides ever agree to tour Samoa or any of the Islander nations.
Barritt being strong in defence shouldn't surprise anyone though. I'm not going to judge him on that because it's something he does very well. But when he's got Farrell on his inside, who also is a very good defender, he just offers absolutely nothing to the side. He can just count his lucky stars that May scored on the next phase after he botched that piss easy 2 v 1 down the right wing. I mean seriously? We learn that kind of stuff at U12s, and giving the pass 3 metres in front of the tracking defender is not how to do it. Just draw and give, easy as pie.
I don't think you can come out and say that he didn't do anything though, when he's played well in defence. I realise this is me being incredibly pedantic. He doesn't offer a lot in attack, particularly when he doesn't make the most of opportunities, and that's half of the game. As such it's perfectly valid to suggest he had a bad game and shouldn't be in the team. I just don't like the idea that all of his game was awful.
Farrell couldn't defend in this game either tbh. Needs to get back to club rugby and sort his shit out.
Yeah but I know he's going to defend well - if he doesn't then he can gagf. So when looking at him as a consistent option as an England centre I want to look at the other aspects of his game. the fact is he offers absolutely nothing going forward other than the lump up crash ball/dummy run game. Nty Helps when daddy helps pick the side tbf
There are also rumours that the officials in Samoa are siphoning offwhat little money there is for themselves but I can't tell if that's made up.
Eastmond's playing for Bath so he's fit. I rate him but Ford 10 Eastmond 12 is just too lightweight for my liking. Twelvetrees is Not Terrible and has enough good games in the position for England to be in the running to play 12 instead. I've no real beef with the side, except for them not bringing back Burrell. One change I'd make is Yarde starting but he didn't do owt to earn it last week.
