2011 State Of Origin

NSW can afford to have a half like Pearce who doesn't create that much as long as they pick a genuinely creative 6. A host of their attacking problems will be solved if they fix their defence and pick some props who actually make metres and lay a platform. Very few halfback's can do anything behind a beaten pack. Johns was one. Thurston is another. NSW don't have one, currently.

  2. Magic AJ Parker

Yeh that was more to my point, the only other two you could possibly make an argument for imo are Hodkinson & Walsh, neither are more creative than Pearce. I think people just get to caught up in Thurston's performances and forget that if it wasn't or Smith he wouldn't be capable of putting in the performances he has to date.

Smith is pretty overrated in Origin IMO. I haven't actually seen him do THAT much in it, especially this year where Lockyer pretty much took over his "role".

With their available players, I'd like to see a spine combo like.

    1. Hayne/Dugan
    6. Campese
    7. Carney
    9. Farah

They have genuine short and long kicking games, organisational skills and creativity. If Farah can keep a cool head and Hayne or Dugan get's involved, that combo could steer them to a series win... As long as their forwards aren't shithouse.

Locky was a ****ing beast this series. Really cut them up in the all important game 2. Special mention to Scott and Shilo in that match for the platform though.

    Where?

Carney and Campese never really worked for Canberra because neither of them could organise a root in a brothel at the time.

I think Walsh is more creative but he's not as good a halfback overall, I would agree.

I couldn't disagree more. I think Alec is right, and I've thought the same for a while now. Smith actually hasn't done very much at all in Origin apart from 2007, for mine. To say Thurston wouldn't be capable of his previous performances without Smith is quite untrue - Game 1 this year, he was probably the best on-field and without Smith. Smith's effort in Game 2 this year was average at best, though he was still recovering from injury I suppose.

Farah does it for the Tigers. Campese does it for the Raiders. Carney has done it when Pearce has been out for the Roosters.

It is a better option than Ennis, Pearce and random 5/8 afaic.

Farah and Campese are both awful at it tbh.

    Would much rather have Pearce.

As a natural and out and out five-eighth I'd go Carney ahead of Campese. Though if Canberra keep up their form (meaning Campese does also) I'd definitely try and get him into the team somewhere. Even if it is at right centre to defend Inglis. Campese's defence is getting better and better. I know a few of us on here recognise it but it is such a strength in his game, compared to everyone else in the competition who plays even a similar role, that it should come into consideration outside of his attacking prowess when it comes to rep teams next season IMO.

All in all I think the one obvious thing to come out of this season is Dugan needs to be fullback.

    lol^.

    Why?

    I'd still take Stewart.

Because he's been the best player in the competition.

Isn't Brett Stewart coming off a knee reco? If so he's possibly gone as a player I reckon. His speed is EVERYTHING considering what his game essentially is.

Yeah the Spine I would pick is...

    1.Dugan
    6.Carney
    7.Pearce
    9.Farah/Ennis (Not 100% how I'd go yet.

Need to **** Waterhouse off and give another second rower 3 games on the right IMO. Not sold on Lewis being used in that position either.

After being a staunch Ennis supporter I reckon I'd go back to Farah. He's improved dickloads over the past 12 months IMO.

 @ the crazy Dugan love. You're off your head.

We'll have to see what he's like upon return. Hopefully, for NSW's sake he's fully fit. Even if he doesn't play fullback, he'd make an excellent winger (as Dugan probably would.)

I wouldn't say his speed is everything. He's just as good at sniffing out a try as Dugan and even more reliable IMO. He also has quite a bit more experience. I love Dugan as a player but I agree with EWS, he is becoming a little overrated.

We've had this discussion over a few beers before. Him continuing to rape hasn't changed anything.

How so? What part of his game is not right up there with the best. With Stewart being out he is right up there with the best defensive and positional fullbacks in the competition. He is second in tackle breaks to Tony Williams and he's half the ****ing size. Always beats the first man and often makes the linebeak. And since mid season he's added ball playing to his game which is rather erratic at this point but has showed some signs of absolute brilliance (especially when teaming with Croker [who will play Country origin nect year]).
