I couldn't get out the door at work for 2 minutes to put a bet on either ffs

I dunno about that, they were pretty much reffed out of the game tonight.

If you take away the shitty officiating, reversing the Slater and Waqa no-tries, they should have had 14-20 points on the board. And Storm are probably the best side in the comp at pressing an advantage/holding momentum.

Overall, I was pretty disappointed in Cronk's kicking game. Wee-dup was very rusty, but he has had a long layoff. I'm glad that he wasn't drafted straight in, and that Finch was actually hurt. Wouldn't be surprised to see Finchy in the side next week, and Wee-dup on the bench/centre/wing.

If the storm were awarded either of those dubious no try calls they would've won I reckon

Nah, I can't agree with that. That's well in excess of the reality IMO. Souths played quite a bit better than Melbourne irrespective of the rub of the green.

Souths were definitely the better team.
I'm not saying Melbourne coulda, shoulda, woulda won, but the fact they didn't have a chance too because of the refs is bullshit.

By "reffed out of the game", I mean reffed out of the contest. They were unable to get a footing in the game and apply scoreboard pressure because of some horrid calls. Souths were the better side, but they were given plenty of favours to enable them to be.

Yeah, I think I could be tempted that far as long as it's prefaced with or accompanied by a recognition that Melbourne didn't really do themselves many favours either.

I certainly don't think the game is a total write off, as EWS and some others do. I do think there are inferences to be derived which give us some indication of the state of these teams. Melbourne and Souths were both in pretty ordinary form coming into this and I think Souths went a fair ways to bouncing back from it. Melbourne were not as encouraging. I think they're in a slump. I mean nearly everyone on here backed Melbourne and by a handsome margin. They were miles from that, even taking into account the poor refereeing, which I think is part of the reason why people are overestimating the impact of the officials.

I actually expected Souths to win, bet on them and everything.

    And?

I'm sure you have your reasons for thinking the game was a write-off, EWS. I didn't mean to make it sound like you or anyone else was complaining about the refereeing because their tip may have been wrong :p

I just mean that I think most people were expecting better from Melbourne (and expect better from them in the future) and the officiating is a bit of an escape goat. Melbourne really did not play well at all IMO and I think that observation is being completely drowned out by talk of the officiating.

I thought Souths were poor. Like I said earlier their defence was very good, Inglis stopped at least two tries from memory just by his presence and they were hitting hard all night. Their wrestle was also far superior to Melbourne's, they were turning players onto their back nearly every tackle and Melbourne's slow play the balls were very noticeable, Souths on the other hand were finding their fronts on nearly every carry.

I thought Souths really struggled in attack, their first try was very fortunate and the 2nd and 3rd tries were just scored on the back of momentum and pressure after back to back sets. But they really failed to create much despite really dominating the game for large periods, granted with a 14 point lead they were probably more concentrated on completing sets and playing field position so maybe I'm being a little harsh. Their kicking game was again very average and well nullified by Melbourne, I think Slater took nearly every long kick bar one or two on the full and you just can't afford to do that against Slater, he's a fucking boomerang.

Souths get the 2 weeks to work on their attack and they need it imo, I'm not convinced it's just a poor form slump. Merritt and Farrell could also do with some kick defusal work, I thought they looked really shaky last night.

Sounds weird but I reckon Bellamy is the more reassured coach coming out of that game, it was pretty clear where they fell down and it's not like it's a structural or system failure of their game plan they just weren't doing what they usually do best and they're far easier fixes imo than what Souths have ahead of them. Inglis glosses over what's a pretty average attacking side imo.

I certainly wouldn't change it up now but I reckon in 2014 they need to go with

    6. Keary
    7. Reynolds
    11. Sutton

I really rate Keary, looks a promising talent.

I think Keary is worth getting in there too, although Suttons probably a bit lazy for the back row
