Andrews was a better all round player and much more mobile. I see and accept you point on the "partnership"-thing, but aside from that Andrews over Bakkies any day. That also eliminates at least one yellow card and citing per game! :p

Juan Smith might push for a spot at 6 whilst moving Schalk to 7 and Venter to 8, then dropping Rassie to the bench. I believe that Venter was an immense player since he was a ball carrier as well as a rucking loose forward with great strength, speed and ball skills. He was vastly better than Van Niekerk was, although I always liked Big Joe. Andre Venter is/was just a better player, period.

On these two I will argue all day. Steyn's game is waaaay to one dimensional and he brings ZERO attacking prowess or defending power to the game. Honiball couldn't kick at goal to save his life, but he was the epitome of taking the ball to the line and creating line breaks for his outside backs to run off and he was a MAMMOTH defender - from there his nickname of "Lawnmower". If you wanted a kicking flyhalf who can at least make a tackle somewhere in between, Jannie De Beer is your man over Steyn.

Same for Paulse, yes he was quick, but he lacked any sort of strength to break or make a tackle. Hendricks was fast, strong and contributed greatly on defense - just ask Jonah Lomu. :p

    Catch fire and die please.

Percy holds nearly all South African and numerous international records in too many categories to name. He was world class and is a legend of the game both nationally and internationally.

There aren't many flyhalves in the history of the game who were better kickers than DC.

Must be able to find some success rate stats. Can't imagine there would be too much difference. Carter can run and tackle too. Fox couldn't.

lol at Droos. Pussy Montgomery was always a very average rugby player. His records are all down to longevity and not talent.

  5. Droos JP Rhodes

    Said no one ever . . .

Except you off course, but that doesn't say much.

  6. Fiery GR Smith

Dan Carter's kicking percentage is about 83%. i haven't been able to get any stats on Grant Fox but doubt it's higher than that.

    (Oh and shut up Droos)

  7. Fiery GR Smith

On the Pussy Montgomery thing. Can't believe you rate him so highly Droos. I assumed he was internationally ridiculed...even in SA. Percy cared more about how the highlights in his perfectly manicured and peroxided hair looked on TV. Prank player.

Tbf we've had pretty shitty fullbacks since 95.

  10. MrPrez CM Dyer

Percy was a good kicker and a solid fullback but he'd definitely be a weak spot in that side.

  11. Fiery GR Smith

It's good that you are proud of Percy, Droos. It's like me being proud of and defending Chris Martin. But let's face it...they were pretty shit and kept getting picked for lack of better options ;)

What was Grant Fox better at than Carter?

This isn't me being condescending or anything, but I haven't ever heard of Grant Fox because I don't know a lot about rugby before I've watched.

I haven't even seen that much of Carter really, but ever time I have seen him he kicks fantastically and runs and passes very well too.

  13. Fiery GR Smith

Nothing really...apart from passing the ball. He was gun at that because he had brilliant backs outside him. He was very timid in defense and not big or strong enough to take the ball up and attack with ball in hand. So he either kicked it or shovelled it along to the outside backs. As much as I loved Fox at the time he paled by comparison to guys like Mehrts and then Carter.

  14. Hurricane JD Hurricane

This is just some random person from the Internet. But he makes some valuable points. Among them fox did not have kicking tees - he had to hack a mound in the ground.

In my mind's eye Fox was the better goal kicker than Carter. Carter has other attributes that Fox never had.

Also when you compare atgs in north american sports it is often how many rings do they have, Carter is made of glass and does not have a world cup victory neither does mehrtens

I'd have a go at doing a Wales line up, but for most of my lifetime they've been an average team with maybe one or two exceptional players. Most of the Welsh legends are from before my time, so I can't really judge them.

Even post-1980, they'd have a pretty reasonable back line, but I suspect if I did a Welsh line up, a good half of the players would be from recent vintage.

The suggestion that Grant Fox was a better rugby player than Dan Carter is too funny tbh. That article obv written by an Aucklander...and a very old-school one at that.

Yeah Hurricane, whoever wrote those summaries had no clue tbf.

  18. Fiery GR Smith

Well he obv knows a little bit...but only a little bit. Stone Age mentality. Sure, Fox controlled games well with his boot, but then so does Carter (who can punt about 20 metres further btw). Fox had some outstanding backs outside him who can take some credit for his undoubtedly good passing skills, but he was quite one-dimensional...especially when you compare that to the allround brilliance of Carter.

Also reckon Hurricane had to search pretty hard on the internet to find an article where someone has rated Fox ahead of both Mehrtens and Carter. This guy even rates Mehrts as better than Carter.

Obviously a rugby lover but a bit of a muppet really.

I hate this method at the best of times, but at least in franchise sports it's possible to have a team built around you if you're good enough. Using it as a measure of player's achievements in a representative sport is retarded though.

  20. Fiery GR Smith

Agreed. Horrible way to compare players. Let it pass though.
