Naw, he's been playing Union so I doubt he really thinks about doing it as much anymore.

 League is so soft. "Shoulder charges" are a huge part of AFL

    trolololol

Make safe tackles illegal because vaguely similar tackles which are already illegal can be harmful.

    Sounds legit.

Might as well make classic legs tackles illegal too because if they happen to be made around the neck they can fuck people up.

Yeah its an absolute joke. It's a genuine defensive weapon when blokes just try and dig underneath you at the A defender and they're sitting ducks.

Hardly surprising, political correctness moving into sport is so dire.

Don't think a petition ever works, but the dumbass Commission will probably go back to allowing them when they find out that their "highlight reel" advertisements are now only about 1/3rd of the length.

Incompetent pricks, who voted these mugs in?

Not so much political correctness as it is medical research. Serious head injuries can do a lot of damage to someone's future, not just quality of life but length of life.

I think a total ban is overkill, it's not like all shoulder charges make contact with head or even the majority for that matter, it's a minority. Much like anything in life you don't make rules or decisions based on the minority.

Lengthy suspensions for those who do make contact with the head is the best way to go imo. The incentive of a shoulder charge is to fire up your team mates/crow, feel like a mad cunt and the dis-incentive is copping a 5+ week suspension. It wont be long until coaches and players start to cling onto the fact that there's just no where near enough value in comparison to the risk and players will become far more selective.

The easiest rule of thumb to remember is just don't shoulder charge someone who is shorter than you for starters.

Yes but that's the same with any tackle that makes contact with the head - which is why head high tackles are already illegal. It's stupid.

  11. Benny BS Read

That's not true. Not hard to avoid the head of a shorter attacker when using the shoulder. A good charge hits the runner at Sternum Height or lower AFAIC. The Lower you hit the more extension at the Knee (= Power) you have to drive through them.

  12. Benny BS Read

Absolutely. If you were to use the rationale being applied to the Shoulder Charge to every tackle we'd be left playing touch footy. I honestly reckon as many and I'd even wager plenty more head high tackle citings occur from traditional round arm tackling styles than from Shoulder charges each season.

  13. Tartmaster AJ James

    This.

The point of contact is actually extremely important in regards to the chance of serious injury occurring. The point of banning the shoulder charge is to minimize concussion type injuries occurring which are definitely at a higher risk from a shoulder injury because the shoulder as a point of contact inevitably has a higher force due to it's relative nature to the majority of the mass as well as the surface area of impact, the shoulder muscle is also more likely to be dense reducing the amount of force that is absorbed by the muscle and increasing the amount of force absorbed by the skull. The direction of the force is also significantly different. Yes all head high tackles have a risk of causing injury, but the risk of causing injury is not the same. It is extremely naive to think that the shoulder charge is not an inherently more dangerous tackle then a more traditional wrap tackle.

The shoulder charge is one of the biggest differences to Union which makes League attractive to many players and fans, the "hard hitting" factor. Now it is going to become a wussy game for ballerinas like union where you can't ever properly ruck with your boot anymore - fucking softies spoiling rugby on all fronts imo.

Sidenote: Harsher tackles are allowed in soccer than in union imo, fucking gay kents.

Boy I'm loving this Independent Commission.

And banning rucking has caused all manner of problems for Union IMO. They should just legislate better against people who cross the line with legitimate techniques that if handled badly can cause injury. I mean, Adam Thomson got banned for rucking someone's head a couple of weeks ago - and rightly so - but the rucked player didn't even think there was anything in it, but it sure as hell cleans out the breakdown more quickly.

Just increase the penalties for those players who fail to use the appropriate technique rather than making sweeping rule changes which impact on the game.

The problem is football codes, and in fact most sporting bodies, continually fail to recognise the grey zone which contains that of accident. There is a fundamental lack of understanding of what is really going on out there. As well as a blatant effort to disregard it. For example, you'll often hear the referee say "I know he was falling mate but you can't make contact with the head." Wtf is that? Some guy slips and his head is suddenly presented with your shoulder, what are you supposed to do?

The shoulder charge ban is an effort on the part of the administrators to further extend the regions of black and white into the grey zone. Unfortunately, the existence of a grey zone does not negate black and white - The truth of the matter - Which is that you can't legislate against accidents. And you certainly don't improve the problem by criminalising everything which could lead to an accident.

Yeah - you certainly get that a lot in Union where the arm of the tackler come into contact with the shoulder of a guy looking to drive low, and so the arm slips up over the shoulder and whacks the tackled player round the head. Complete accident, but always the Penalty (which is the rules, so no surprise). At least they don't bin 'em for the accidental ones.

  20. SM MD Dorn

0.05% of all tackles were shoulder charges last year. Of those, 4% made contact with the head.

Dealing with a huge issue I see
