Vipers excited for the future after demolition of Pumas

The Vipers have pulled off an exciting start to the CricSim season after whitewashing the Pumas Cricket Club in Round 1 this week. In both First Class and Second Class cricket, the Vipers won in all forms of the game announcing to the CricSim community that they are a threat for Season 11. With this comes great expectation and pressure that the Vipers will be required to fulfil as the season moves along.

In the Bannerman shield, the Vipers won by 45 runs thanks to a dominant display by GJ Weaver and WC Welker both getting 5 wicket hauls in the first and second innings respectively. Pick of the batsman was JRE Luffman with a more than respectable 80 runs.

Likewise in the Horrigan Cup the Vipers were able to overcome the Pumas by four wickets. With Weaver once again being the pick of the bowlers getting figures of 4/19 and JE McGrath scoring a solid 67 runs in the win.

Second class Vipers side, the Cobras, were also successful in beating the Kittens with a comfortable innings and 76 run thumping. The Cobras only had to go into bat once with a number of players making good scores, OT Farrell and R Dawson were the best though scoring 86 and 70 runs respectively. MS Winney was definitely the best of the bowlers getting figures of 6/49 in the win.

The Horrigan Plate lead to yet another defeat capping off the massive round for the Vipers club where the Cobras defeated the Kittens by 7 wickets chasing 205 runs for the victory. Bowling in the game was just brilliant as KF Tait and BOY Blunder both grabbed 5 wicket hauls leaving no wickets for any of the other bowlers and putting the Cobras into a very good place before going into bat. T Nickler impressed with the bat scoring a scintillating 101 runs including seven fours with ZW Poole also contributing with a rock solid 81 runs.

Chairman of Selectors for the Cobras, SJ Nova was extraordinarily pleased with the Cobras Round one effort and applauded the side’s strong win.

“It was a great start against the Kittens. I thought Witters and Winney were great and I really think that they can make the next step up this season. Farrell was excellent on his Cobras debut, hopefully he will be a big boost to the batting lineup”

Asked about whether this was what he was expecting or whether it was even better Nova was adamant that the side was right where he was expecting and had high hopes for Season 11.

“I'm expecting us to be a big threat in the ALC once again. Our younger players are starting to look very good though I think some of the more experienced players will need to pick up the intensity, but I'm sure they will as the season goes on to give us a very solid line up”

“Some of our younger players like Winney, Witters and Farrell will keep improving and then add in the experience of myself, Blunder, Tait and Boland it gives our ALC team some great players to attempt to claim back to back ALC titles”

These high expectations from Nova were reflected for Vipers Chairman of Selectors J Torres who reflected on the first round demolition with a more conservative approach acknowledging that there is still plenty of work that needs doing.

“Performances of all four sides were steady without setting the world on fire, the main positive to take out of Round 1 for the Vipers is the consistency over the performances, our wins didn't really come out of 1 or 2 people standing up and making big scores or taking bags, it was more a team effort and that's really encouraging. The fact that that we can still claim all the points (Bannerman Shield) when blokes like Eggman, Luffman and Torres are still a wee way off where they need to be is great” Torres said.

Positivity was also through the roof when it came to the second class side. With Torres expressing some true excitement about the successfulness of the current Vipers junior system.

“I saw some real positives come from the Cobras thumping of the Kittens, bowling in particular. It was our allrounders who did the damage, youngsters ER Witters and MS Winney with bags of wickets further showed our development program in full force”

The feeling of excitement is ripe at VipersHQ and this was shown when Torres was asked about hopes and expectations.

“It’s what we had both hoped for and expected, however individual player performances will need to stand up from here on in for the season, but it was a good first round to blow the cobwebs out after a prolonged off season”

While also declaring what he believed the Vipers were capable of for Season 11.

“With all XI in our first XI having an important role to play I want to be able to make sure after every game that everyone has played a role. We have plenty of big name players, however it’s not all up to them. Expect some powerful displays from the Vipers in the coming rounds when the big names are firing with the ongoing support of the entire club” Nino concluded

Torres had a very level headed approach to the what would be expected for Season 11 and that is years of experience talking. One thing the Vipers will need to be certain of is that they don’t like the high expectations and hype get to them and become complacent. At the moment, the possibilities for the Vipers are endless and there are exciting times ahead.

The Vipers second round is against Cyclones where they will be hoping to capitalise on some early form and momentum.

I think he meant in general over the whole round. I would call losing all 4 of your games a 'demolition'.

I rather like it, it was clear, concise, and straight to the point.
