Should just be the winner of the overall domestic comp + winner of round robin/other finalist if overall winner = round robin leader then that means 6 teams play each other home and away 2v3 1 v winner of 2 v 3 all over in 12 weeks
Well it did use to be play each team once, then top 4 played it out in the semis and then finals. Which I personally thought went well.
I'm actually looking forward to this season more so than i have in previous seasons. I always like looking at how the teams shape up with new players/transfers etc.
I'd rather watch canterbury vs natal then the crusaders vs the sharks I actually think the whole idea of super rugby is as fake as the IPL.
The one reason I personally find the Super 15 fake these days is all these player movements. It's like the NBA. Players aren't playing for their region they're playing for their team. The main reason I like NPC is because in most cases the players are playing for their city. Also because the teams are more true to home. Teams representing smaller areas. Plus it's a better type of rugby imo. Super 15 is the plastic house NPC is the wooden house.
Amen, brother. Amen. It's getting worse too, as you no longer even have to play for the Franchise's home provinces to get a game.
It is fucking silly Why do we need the super 15? our NPC is strong enough to take centre stage if we have the all blacks playing here in NZ the currie cup is deffo strong enough to take the spotlight in SA. Also another thing I'd rather see the allblacks play in March April and miss the middle of the NPC in my ideally run NZ rugby calender Fed-June- NPC March- April - Tri Nations/Bledisloe Cup (fuck the argies, have it home and away- so vs SA/Aus only twice) July-Mid September- Champions League ( best 2 teams from Aus,SA and NZ) October-November- ABs tour the north/ North tours NZ alternate years
It's more the exposure players get to Australian and South African players and their different playing styles, conditions etc. I semi-agree with you on the IPL thing but there's a positive trade off because there's more opportunity for guys behind players like Carter(Slade) to move and develop in their best position.
By far the biggest benefit is for Australia though who don't have such a decent 2nd tier structure as RSA or NZ. Obviously they soon would if Super Rugby were dumped, but they'd never make anywhere near as much money from an alternative Australia-only system. I'd also be quite keen to see a Pacific Islands or Fiji/Samoa team enter the NPC. They'd compete at that level. They'd probably have to play all home games in Auckland to make it cost effective, but they'd get the support.
yeah the npc is deffo better, would be nice to see the money pumped into super rugby to go to the heartland teams so we could have the old school 3 division npc back nothing was better than having the mighty king country in div 1
It's not going to be 25 rounds. The teams take a break after 15 rounds and then play 3 more rounds then the playoffs. Personally, I think the break makes the competition a lot more interesting. The break for the internationals will come at the right time and those last 3 weeks are going to be intense. I don't think I have ever looked forward to a rugby season more.
When the NZRU proposed going back to the 3 division model the smaller unions complained and stopped that from happening. Now you got the ridiculous premiership/championship.
Only because there was no additional funding coming their way commensurate with the increased standard required. Heartlands Championship's a bloody good competition because the cost is so low, despite being a nationwide competition.
If the NPC with 3 divisions replaced the super 15 I garuntee you rugby would be better for it. It could eventually mould into an english football esque setup with youth academies, reserves teams etc
Melbourne Rebels enter race to sign Cooper Cronk I'll believe it when I see it. Would have to be some serious coin, I reckon.
I don't think he'd suit rugby at all. He makes most of his runs from 1 tackler out of the ruck from what i have seen. In rugby those gaps wont exist.
