Yeah, Boyd has been a very strong defender on the wing for a long time. But he isn't the best Origin winger of the last decade.

Boyd's been a great Origin winger for us. People who think he's just a glorified finisher playing outside Inglis are muppets.

Yeah that is true you still have to read the play and be in the right place n Boyd is excellent at it and given finishing tries is a huge facet of wing play much like metremaking for props and distribution for hookers its not a thing to discredit

That said 75% min of FG wingers would be able to finish the bulk of his origin 4 pointers

    Mat Rogers

Started as a specialist wing finisher and ended a quality ball playing centre capable of playing 6 well. Not to mention playing from 10-15 in rugby during his prime

No such attempt was made, not by me anyway.

It's true that most first grade wingers would've been able to score the vast majority of Boyd's Origin tries. I don't think we should shy away from pointing that out; he's played on the end of a lethal edge in a good side against some really poor defenders, and he's scored a number of easy tries as a result.

I don't think we should be rating Boyd based on his "try scoring feats" though. As a winger he's been truly excellent positionally in both attack and defence, his work under the high ball has been good and he's contributed with dummy half runs from his own end. I don't think "most first grade wingers" substituted in would offer as rounded a game.

We should not laud Boyd as a try-scoring freak as if it's actually his own doing, but we should respect him for what he has actually excelled at in Origin.

Fullback's the easiest position to look good in tbh.

    Just look at Moltzen.

To be fair it's also one of the easiest positions to look terrible in.

"One of the better fullbacks in the comp" would imply he was in the best eight of those who actually played fullback this year for mine. In terms of how I'd rate those blokes as fullbacks overall he'd be 10-12 IMO, but in terms of how they've played this year alone I think he'd scrape into the bottom of the 8.

I think, undoubtedly, Inglis, Hayne, Slater, Stewart, Tomkins, Milford and Moylan are better than him. I'd definitely take him ahead of Perrett, Quinlan, Minichiello and Zillman. So that leaves an "upper lower range" of himself, Tedesco, Boyd, Barba and Gordon. He's been better than all of those guys based on this year alone IMO, but they're all a bit better than what they've shown this year so it's hard to say.

I think it's a lot easier to look or be perceived as, terrible in the halves.

Dunno....only takes a few high balls to be dropped and a fullback's worth starts getting questioned.

Halves can play pretty shitty for long periods of time and still generally get by. Just ask Peter Wallace.

    Build a bridge mate

  17. Julian BJ Taylor

Yeah I agree with this 100%

  18. Lukic L Popovic

Yeah, but most fans will look at Perrett and see that he's safe and returns the ball decently and think yep, he goes alright at fullback.

On the flipside, if you get a shitcunt on the same sort of level in the halves, you're looking at Ben Roberts, Josh Hoffman types.

The casual fan will most of the time miss a fullback being terribly out of position for a grubber/chip/40/20 whatever and just say it was a great kick or if a bust is made and the FB is nowhere to be found it's great attacking play, but a half can put in say the equivalent of a dud kick and they'll be found out.

  19. Lukic L Popovic

Pretty much what separates a good FB from a shit one, is that the FB has a generally a passive role in the game so they need to force themselves to stand out and can get by a passanger, where as a half is always involved so if they're shit you can tell.
