Player movements and rumours

Not sure about that. At 24yrs of age and after 5 years in first grade I think a player should have the right to move clubs freely without opposition clubs being put off by a compensation fee. I think there should be favourable conditions put in place in favour of the club trying to retain the player, in this case the Tigers such as a salary cap discount and right to final offer.

But it's the 17-21yr old kids who are being poached before they've even been given a chance at the club who developed them that really needs to stop IMO.

Yeah but what if he hasn't got a way into first grade? It's not being poached if you aren't guaranteed a spot. Same as Burton? Why would Burton hang around if it's been made clear that Luai and Cleary are the first choice halves?

Tedesco is a textbook poaching - local junior, team stuck by him through injury and went to a 'bigger' club offering off field perks, sponsorship deals and on-field success the other club couldn't. Staines leaving because he can't get a run at Penrith is what it is. If you don't want to lose him, play him.

Staines is a 19yr old kid, suggesting that Penrith should be rushed into giving him the fullback position or lose him is ridiculous. Given the investment they have put into him they deserve the right to be given time to blood him into their top grade squad or at the least be compensated for the investment they put in to him.

Penrith shouldn’t be punished for having a strong first grade side & the Bulldogs rewarded because they have completely fucked their roster and are now willing to start a new project where they can poach a top end kid from another clubs youth system.

I’m don’t completely disagree with your stance on Tedesco, I just don’t see compensation for senior players ever being feasible given how little money is really in the game. A compensation system on Under 21 players as a disincentive for clubs to go on poaching raids of talented youth players would only reward & protect clubs who invest in their pathways and junior development.

Yeah but why should Staines have to sit when he's first grade ready and a team is willing to pay him? This just promotes inefficiency by having an inferior player being one of the 16 NRL fullbacks. It would prevent the most talented players being on the field. I get your point and the Panthers shouldn't feel obliged to play him, but if he's not in their best 17 and he would be for another team, it's wrong to prevent him from pursuing it no matter what investment was made. What if tears his achilles in reserves and never reaches the same level/his potential?

The Tedesco example is worse because literally everything was done right, the Tigers made him a star and wanted to compensate him fairly but he left because the Roosters offered a more lucrative opportunity due to financial incentives off the field. That's where compensation should come in more so than the former example.

Nah, If you've given a guy a first grade spot, made him a star and want to pay him fairly and you *still* can't convince him to stay, then I think it says a lot more about your club than anything else.

A young gun that you've brought through juniors and is having cash thrown at them by some desperate club is a much better case for compensation, IMO

I tend to think discounts for local juniors is the best way around it, something like (although the below may already be in place I don't know):

Junior (flegg etc) to first grade contract 15% (seems high but they're small contracts)
+5 years in first grade- 20%
+10 years in first grade- 30%

Those discounts count outside the cap.

Encourages clubs to make a play at promising juniors and encourages one club players (which personally I think the game needs more of). Although I do quite like the idea of Roosters having to fork over say 10% of any poaching contracts to the club they poach from.

Staines doesn’t have to stay, if Penrith didn’t want to keep him or hold him back then he could go freely, they could loan him out to a club who was in desperate need or the club who wanted him so bad could pay say a flat 200k compensation fee (pulling a number out of my ass) for any junior who had come through the junior rep grades at that club.

I don’t really care if Penrith have two of the top 16 fullbacks in the game, if they’re providing more to the game through development and investment in pathways than other clubs then good luck to the them. The game should be incentivising that kind of player development not rewarding other clubs benefiting from it. It’s why I detest the thought of a draft, unless the game wants to centralise and pay for player development.

I don’t agree, Tedesco decided he was going to leave because he wanted to progress his career and he didn’t see that happening at the Tigers. That’s more of a reflection on the Tigers as a club than a club with plenty of cash to spend coming over the top and just blowing the Tigers out of the water.

I think in this instance the Tigers should have been given an advantage in negotiations with a salary cap discount for a player with 5+ years service & meeting the requirements of being a junior. However I don’t think moving on from the Tigers was all about money for Tedesco and he probably would have left anyway.

Discounts solve a different problem to the one I’m speaking about, I think they’re a good option for a different reason but it would take a number of years to introduce. You can’t just give clubs stacked with juniors another 2m worth of salary cap space, clubs have already shown the current salary cap is more than they can afford.

A compensation fee is something that could be easily implemented tomorrow.

Is there anyone that should have a dip at benj on a one year deal you think?

  10. Lukic L Popovic

Roosters are probably the next best team as Keary is a high injury risk and Benji can fill in well enough. Maybe Newcastle? Don't think many fg teams would improve with him - we're the best team for him sadly.

Every team could use him as a 3rd half though on a 1 year deal

Broncos retaining Pangai is a massive mistake. They had grounds to cut him loose without compensation. He's not worth half what he's getting paid. They had a perfect opportunity to redeem some of their recruitment errors and they didn't take it.

They're the 3 I thought of. It's not like he has to be a walk up start, I don't think he's under any illusions about being a first choice half after being in and out this year and the broncos. Would love to see him end up somewhere that has a crack at finals.

Let's just wait and see how quickly that NRL integrity investigation comes to an end..

May have been a cost saving in the long run.

Tigers need a huge culture shift at the club, reports coming out of the club that the players called and intervention with their coach to talk about feeling like they are stepping on egg shells because they can be dropped at any given moment speaks to a playing group that's had far too much say for far too long.

That's not to dismiss the value of job security and trust at work but he's not sacking people from their employment, just temporarily from their role in hopefully and effort to further develop them.

Reynolds is the only player dropped who was hard done by. Benji had a shockver vs. the Titans, Garner cost us the Warriors game with shit defence and anyone else dropped except McIntyre is either completely shit or not in our plans.

Us being the 9th place specialists is the perfect place for this to happen. Not good enough to win and not shit enough for widespread change. I'm glad this shit is coming out now.

Keep Aloiai, Leilua x2, Liddle, Nofoaluma, Talau, Mikaele, Twal, Doueihi, Musgrove and McIntyre - piss the rest off.

Yeah Madge is gone. The players have won the battle. His only changes of note were swapping Brooks and Marshall and swapping Mbye and Doueihi.

  17. Lukic L Popovic

... and Benji is gone while we have Brooks til 2023.

Twice we've fucked off Marshall for Brooks now. The shittest fucking cunt in the NRL for our club's greatest ever player and one of the game's legends. Fuck this.

  18. AVA T Delonge

Yeah poor Marshall getting canned twice for the same player

I'm cautiously happy we nabbed Todd Payten for coach.

  20. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

Nah they had to keep him. He is an absolute gun, and the fact he plays middle and edge to a rep quality makes him even more valuable. Lockyer needs to be his mentor or whatever bullshit they are calling it, and get the cunt sorted and ready to play next year.
