the jury is well and truly still out on that one

  2. Lukic L Popovic

Matt Lodge is going to be in first grade. Santi hopefully as well.

I've always been a big fan of Glenn. But last year, and especially this year, his defence has slipped, and he has barely made a break.

Jazman is on the mark with this. He's primarily a hole-running second rower and he was running off Hoffman. Hard to fault him for not making a break.

Cows lacks Coote. Slot him in for Lui. Also I reckon it's more likely that Ethan Lowe will start at second row with Taumololo at lock. As said though, old mate has no idea on edge v middle backrowers. It's amazing how many people don't.

    Up the guts cunt

It's fair enough to feel like this. I agree he had a shit 2014.

I'm not sure the reasons can be all chalked up to Hoffman / Barba

....I think he's on the decline.

Why do you think that though? Because he got little to no quality ball this season?

  9. Boobidy BJ Gemmell

That doesn't explain his defence. It was awful all year.

  10. jazman84 JM Eightyfour

That's never been his strong suit though, I personally haven't picked up any variation in the quality of his defence.

The fact he had next to no impact as an fringe runner makes his faults more prevalent.

    AWTA

Give him a run with the new spine and if he's still having no impact then look at benching/dropping him.

I think he's just flat out bulked up too much coupled in with the fact that he's far more fatigued given his increased role in yardage sets. To be a good hole runner you obviously need to be mobile but the issue with that is most coaches want their second rowers to be yardage eaters.

If you look past the freaks of nature like Sam Burgess & SBW there's not many players who have remained consistent in their line breaking ability whilst also providing their team with good go forward.

Mannering, Luke Lewis & Gavin Cooper are the only ones who spring to mind who'd go close but even then the latter for example doesn't provide his team the sort of yardage most people expect and he's been criminally underrated for a long time as a result. Players like Aubusson, Symonds & Picker are some of the best line runners in the game but have been in and out of First Grade all their careers & never been able to cement a spot purely because IMO they've just been deemed not to provide enough work or impact going forward. 10 years ago all 3 would've been mainstays in most sides.

Players like Alex Glenn, Ryan Hoffman & Scott Bolton fall into the other category, all players who had successful seasons as hole runners but bulked up and/or took on a larger role in their teams go forward and as a result their ability to break the line drastically disappeared. Could throw a few others like Greg Bird, Chris Houston & Ben Creagh into this category too.

Can you tell I think about this a lot? I find it the most interesting position at the moment, purely because every club is trying something different as there's very few elite players who can provide the power based, hole running, ball playing second rower every coach wants.

Yeah, agree with this 100%. I keep expecting yardage-based second rowers to die out but first grade coaches keep disagreeing.

    Good post.

It wasn't his strong point, but he was a good reliable defender. This year he was puss.

Any side with the quality they possess will be there or thereabouts come September next year. Hoffman will be a pretty sizable loss though. His combination with Cronk was a vital cog in their play. Will be interesting to see how they cover it.

He was good defensively, but yeah, now he's been shit.
He was poor in 2013 too, even worse IMO, but that was with Wallace and him being used as a decoy 90% of the time.

I wish Benett will start using him more like in 2012, he was killing it even with Norman.

Reckon his defence was always a bit suss to be honest. Can remember a lot of him coming out of the line/making a bad read over his career.

    DWTA. He was very reliable.
