New South Fails - 2011

    Thoughts?

Snowden and King were utterly dire. I think Poore, Weyman, Tolman, Douglas, Mannah and Rose should be the front runners for prop and bench prop. This area ought to be the first piece of business; the foundation on which everything else is built. If you can't get go-forward and central defence right, you've got trouble.

I've always rated Douglas ahead of Snowden but he wasn't a bad pick and I don't think it's fair to give someone who has earned selection to a large extent just the one game. I'd definitely be okay with him getting picked again. King on the other hand was always a terrible pick and should get axed.

Definitely Tolman time next year regardless though.

    8 Douglas
    10 Tolman

    14 Mannah
    15 Weyman

I think that's my preferred front row rotation, although it may leave a bit to be desired in terms of aggressive running to start the game. Douglas and Tolman are both superb props but they're a bit light on in terms of metres per run - they're both workrate players.

Snowden played one game for us, I'd hate to think that he's out of contention because of one game. Certainly reckon he's outplayed Douglas so far this season...

Not convinced with Tolman yet either tbh... struggles to bend the line and it'll be even more noticeable in SOO.

Mannah is the best bench prop option in my eyes, undecided about the others, I'd be prepared to give Snowden another crack and think Tolman should be up to it by then if he remains injury free.

Doesn't often get driven back though, hits the line, goes to elbows and knees, quick play the balls are often worth more than struggling for an extra 2-3 metres. Another pre season would hopefully see him put a bit more meat on the bones too.

Thoughts are things will change by the time next season origin happens

Thank god, I thought SM was going to comment on props again

    gagf :p

That said, pretty harsh to rubbish Snowden on one game

Yeah, I kinda agree. He's obviously a quality club player, but I dunno how well he'd handle Origin.

But then again, he can't do any worse than some of the shit front rowers NSW has used lately.

I'm not saying Snowden should be out of contention. Merely that he shouldn't have been picked this year and his performance certainly doesn't warrant reselection.

    No Ryles? :p

Now that we've picked him I think it'd be pretty harsh to drop him though. By New South Wales standards he definitely justified selection in that even though there were arguably better players than him, he wasn't a disgraceful pick.

Haha Ryles is not going to get picked. He'd be my first prop picked but any post I make containing the word Ryles is not taken seriously so I don't bother anymore.

You said the same after Jennings's first effort and we're still waiting for him to play even half a decent game. I agree if a player is picked, he should be given a fair go, but FMD, he was pretty awful. If anyone is to blame for NSW losing their lead in the last 10 minutes, Snowden outweighs Ennis by a mile.

Regardless of whether you think he deserved it in the first place, wouldn't it also be harsh to drop King after one chance?

  15. Cribbage RG Cribb

Nah, as I said before, it's a lot different with King because he shouldn't have been anywhere near getting picked to begin with. He was a joke pick and needs to be dispensed with immediately. You can argue about whether Snowden should've been picked too but he was certainly pretty close either way.

Wouldn't rule it out if Freddy gets the job which I think is the most likely outcome if Ricky Stuart picks up a club job.

Gordon and Gidley. Gidley was surprisingly good playing dummy half this year, and Gordon's debut was fine. No need to drop him.
