He's quite an introvert off stage I found. I had beers with a couple of the other lads and they were loose as. Jelly of u seeing an instore though.
That's bullshit, wish the kent came back to Australia I'd go for round two. He'd have to be the most met singer by people on cricsim.
Ha me and my best mate got to the venue about 2 hours early, had a beer. Band walked in, invited us to sound check and then drank with them for several hours before they went on. Best fucking night. Were touring for black sheep boy so best set list I've seen too.
After many, many, many listens The Silver Gymnasium has grown on me. That said I'm not sure I'd like it if it wasn't by Okkervil River. With the exception of Stay Young the second half of the record from White onwards is superb. The two bonus cuts are great tunes as well which really reinforces that strong ending. I think Walking Without Frankie might be one of the most interesting Okkervil River songs ever. Really hope they play it when I see them in a couple of weeks.
The boys were on fire tonight as to be expected. Will was as drunk as ever and he and I were both rocking the denim jacket quite nicely. With the exception of Kansas City and an acoustic No Key, No Plan it was a pretty generic setlist just the playing the hits grouped in with the majority of the new record but with such outstanding energy so nothing wrong with that. Far that chick they have n guitar certainly can shred.
Wasn't sold on the album first listen (as seems to be my normal Okkervil experience). After a few times through though, really digging it. Standouts for me are It Was My Season - Such a strong start to the album, kind of reminds me of Kings of Leon, but yet still distinctively Okkervil All a The Time Every Day - I don't even know what it is I love so much about this song. I don't want to say fun, but I can't think of another word. It's just one of those songs you get lost in, and I challenge anyone to listen to it and not belt out the chorus. So good. Walking With Frankie - I agree with Witters, definitely one of the most interesting OR songs ever, at first I was not a fan. I liked the concept, and the direction they went with it but felt they missed the mark. But with every listen I like it more and more, I can see the becoming one of my favourite songs.
That's so funny because I thought I was the only one who got the Kings of Leon vibe from It Was My Season. Someone was telling me the other day I was talking utter rubbish but I really do think there's something in the vocals. Frankie's a gun as well. They encoded with it last night and needless to say it was superb. I just love how slickly he delivers the most throwaway lines in that song.
I think it's the second verse he's got the real dragged out drawl that Caleb has. Fuck I really need to listen to old school KoL again.
Have you listened to Mechanical Bull by any chance? I'd given up of KoL long ago so I'm not sure what sparked me to give this new record of theirs a listen but I'm so pleased I did. It really does sound like pre-Because of the Times KoL. I was quite astounded they were still up for making songs like that. Definitely worth checking out.
Not yet, I've been meaning to give it a go. You could tell with the last album they were trying to go back to their roots, it just wasn't as good as their early stuff. But honestly I don't think they'll ever match Youth & Young Manhood, it's so gun because its so raw, which lends itself to their style of music so well. I mean Jared didn't even know how to play bass on Y&YM, The others barely knew their instruments, and yet they churned an amazing album. Once it gets cleaner it becomes poppy shit, which isn't what KoL is. And I think Caleb knows that and hates the success they got from Only by the Night, hence the quite obvious push to go back to the bluesy vibe of they first couple. When I went to see them, they played a few songs and then he said something along the lines of "I can see about half of you getting into it and singing along, and about half of you sitting on your fucking arses waiting for us to play sex on fire, well here it is" Played it "If that's all you wanted you can fuck off now"
I wish. Fuck it. Got a cousin who lives in Melbourne. Gonna do some saving up this summer for a plane ticket over to see that show.
