I think Soldado is a decent striker, it's just that he isn't worth the amount they paid for him. He'll probably score a few more goals once the midfield settles down and starts creating more straightforward chances.

Lamela also wasn't worth his price tag imo but he's not a terrible player per se. He'll probably perform better in time.

What's Spuds goal though? Do they want to always come 5th or want to challenge seriously? A squad with depth like their's is going to get them a Europa league spot consistently, but you need game breakers to compete for the title.

Soldado's movement is so, so unimpressive though. There's this idea football fans sometimes have that it's everyone else's fault if the striker isn't getting any chances, but it's nonsense. Soldado just sucks massive hairy balls at finding space in dangerous positions or moving at over 4mph.

Look at how many forward options Nasri had on the ball yesterday compared to Holtby or Lamela. He just looks up and Aguero's immediately darting off in behind with Negredo dropping into the space in front of the defence. Holtby looks up and there's just a big fucking Angry Bird lookalike wandering around like a bell-end.

Yeah, I didn't think Negredo would do much, but his off-ball movement is actually really, really good. Opens up so much space for guys like Nasri, Navas and Aguero to work underneath him.

Valencia must have pissed themselves laughing when Spurs offered £25m for him.

How do you sign game breakers when you don't have Champions League football to offer?

That was always the dilemma facing Spurs.

That's why losing Bale this year was more of a blow than their fans would admit at the time, and why it was so important for Liverpool to keep hold of Suarez. Having piles of cash lying around is useless if the quality of player you need won't sign.

It's interesting now that a lot of the more intellectual football writers who were pouring cold water on the Bale hype are starting to realise how important he was. That backlash was bizarre; it was as if a player who scored late 30-yard winners every other game was too simple to fit with their view of the game- there was no tactical subtlety to him or qualities that people who didn't watch much football would miss. But funny enough, when you take away all those incredible winners, you're left with a lot of poor results.

In the long run they'll be better off for it though.

  9. Furball G Furball

    How's that?

When the team knows each other better and understand each other. I'd rather have all the signings they've made because of Bale's departure than Bale. Although I may have spent the money on Soldado on a different striker. It will come for Spurs, it'll just take time.

Didn't they reject £22m for him from us & Spurs?

Reminds me of Newcastle rejecting £30m for Andy Carroll. Oh how wrong that could've gone.

If your definition of better off is to be the kings of Europa league and consistent 5th-6th place finishes then yeah, they will be, but if you want to be making Champions League and competing for titles, they aren't.

I don't think Spurs are really at fault here because they had no choice, Bale had his mind set on Madrid, but they aren't going to be better off from it.

Arsenal with Oezil is a perfect example of a great move. There wasn't a dire need for an attacking midfielder, especially considering Cazorla was coming off a very good season. But the opportunity presented itself and when you can pick up someone like Oezil who's a world class player and one of the best in the world, you take it. Even if you don't need him at that specific position, class wins championships, not being solid.

Spurs did the opposite. While it's important to have depth when you're playing a season of 50+ games to ensure that you can take the field with a fresh lineup every match, you don't just pour money into a position where you aren't improving it but rather just bolstering it. Lamela, Holtby, Lennon, Townsend, Chadli, Eriksen and Sigurdsson who can all fill in as attacking mids in the 4-2-3-1 Villas-Boas plays. Yes I understand they each have different roles, with Holtby and Eriksen the primarily central players, but it's also a pretty fluid setup so there is the degree of interchangeability. But my point is, especially with Soldado being a mug up front who isn't built to be a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1, you have a lot of silver but no gold. Time will tell if Lamela can live up to his billing, but looking at that you've got a group that no matter what the game, you're putting out a strong 3, but that's kind of where it stops. No better no worse.

It sets up a much better base and foundation for the side though. Without the foundation, a side will always fail, regardless of one star they may have in their team. They can build on this foundation a lot easier than they can build round one player.

they're absolutely not the finished product, and talk of champions league is maybe one or two seasons off, but I know I'd much rather be in the champions league on a team effort, rather than because one of our players fires every match and the rest chip in occasionally, as and when.

So what happens if (for example) Paulinho becomes a star player and fucks off in 2 seasons because he wants to play for a club who's competing in the Champions League?

    Aren't you an Arsenal fan?

    You know exactly what happens.

Not really sure what you're saying :| it's not as though Tottenham were some mid table side devoid of any quality outside of Bale and only ever won a game because of him (or were they :ninja:). They have some decent players in a number of positions.

Anyway, having a good team and game breaking players isn't exclusive though. Class players however not only give your team that spark that can turn a game and take the team to the next level, but it lifts the play of others around them. Bale put defenses into a spin, he'd draw in more than one defender and even if he didn't, he left defensive support with unclear assignments. His presence alone opens up opportunities for the others around him.

Champions league is always one or two seasons off for Spuds. Might as well make that the team motto and in two years you'll probably be saying the same thing.
Also saying you'd rather be in champions league on a team effort over an individual effort is pretty ludicrous. The theory is that a team is more consistent than an individual, but if you make champions league either way, the problem you speak of is actually irrelevant given that it was overcome in the first place to qualify. In fact, it's probably better to make it on the back of an individual because you've got the star and have to fill out weak positions meaning there's a higher ceiling than having a solid squad but not having anything to really fix nor having anything to improve it with.

But that's what these signings set the foundation for - champions league football in one or 2 seasons time. With the right management (that goes a lot further than AVB) there is no reason this team can't do it. But they will need time. They were never going to be firing as they were last season straight away - that much was always clear - but they'll be stronger when they next get into the Champions League than they were the last time they were there.

And now they have even more decent players. Yeah I realise he did, but there is no reason that some of the players they have no can't do that too.

    Yeah I see your point.

Spurs don't have a genius for a manager.

    Next.
