I feel like Bennett has ever really been too phased about his hookers creativity. Honestly wouldn't shock me to see him get someone like Mitch Rein on a one year deal and instead spend the cash going hard at Ponga & Munster. Though with his love of Milford and who's off contract etc, the more obvious play is probably 1. Ponga 6. Milford 7.? 9. Grant
Harry Grant with a new Storm deal. Looking across what else is around I'd think guys like Josh Mcguire, Ofa and Edrick Lee might pick up deals?
Walsh is a no-brainer for mine. Has supposedly asked for a release at the end of the season and wants to move back to QLD. I would be concerned with the number of injuries Ponga seems to sustain he’s missed a lot of games throughout his career now and often plays well below match fitness because of injuries he’s carrying like he is now. I still think a fair chunk of that 1.2m you’re paying for Ponga is just his potential too which is a bit fo a gamble for a 24yr old with a poor injury record.
Agreed, I don’t see Bennett being at all concerned about who he will pick up at dummy half even if it’s one of the last signings they make.
Agree with that re Ponga. Looking at the number of games missed it doesn't seem that massive, but he always seems to be carrying something. I think you forgive it for a year or two as a late teen, but you'd hope he'd be mroe conditioned by now. I actually like that he's staying at Newcastle though, hope he does well and helps them get taken a bit more seriously. Surely Munster is the Dolphins man now
Ponga off the market now. With Munster not available until 2024 that seems to have ruled out any chance of the Dolphins getting a big name spine player. Halves available: 5/8 Kieran Foran, Matt Frawley, Ben Hampton, Lachlan Lam, Matt Moylan, Hayze Perham, Jaeman Salmon, Simi Sasagi, Ashley Taylor, Billy Walters HALFBACK Phoenix Crossland, Kurt Falls, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Cooper Johns, Albert Kelly, Jock Madden, Anthony Milford, Kodi Nikorima, Sean O'Sullivan, Brandon Wakeham, Sam Williams
Wonder if they'd look at someone like Matterson as a bit of a marquee signing? And did McGuire and Bennett have a falling out at Broncos? Looking at who's off contract and who might head to Queensland (and that I think they'll work something out for Walsh) might be getting to something like:
I think they still get on. Bennett gave him the release after he knew he was heading to Souths, IIRC.
They have already confirmed him as a signing. Supposedly POS has come out and said they already have 15 players signed. Maybe they are holding off on announcements at the request of players/strategically.
Taukeiaho turned them down for less money at Catalans. Travesty he won't be in the NRL next year. He's been elite for a while now, had a few seasons where I rated him right up there with the likes of Papalii, Klemmer and Fonua Blake.
Yeh thats a handy pickup, can see Bennett turning him into a very good middle forward. Not convinced he's a 2nd rower.
