Pulp Fiction is one of my favourite movies of all time. Watched it the other day. Haven't actually got round to seeing Reservoir Dogs yet ( I know) but mate has it here at uni so will watch it soon and make a mor einformed comparison.
You will never listen to "stuck in the middle with you" by Steve Miller band the same again after you watch it.
Stuck in the Middle With You = Stealers Wheel Little Green Bag = George Baker Selection Coconut = Harry Nilsson Hooked on a Feeling = Blue Swede Magic Carpet Ride = Steppenwolf Fantastic soundtrack.
1.Pulp Fiction - The dialogue is unmatched as far as Tarantino's work goes. The only real flaw in the movie is when he gets out from behind the camera and puts himself in front of it. He can't act for shit. As far as his directing goes, well, the simple fact is Tarantino's never made a truly great movie (and he's only made two) without an amazing ensemble at his disposal. Pulp Fiction is the ideal exemplar of that - Travolta, Jackson, Willis, Thurman, Roth, Stoltz, Keitel, Rhames... 2.Reservoir Dogs - His Mean Streets, as was once said. In film school Tarantino was obsessed with Scorsese and it certainly shows in this cult classic. It was a sign of things to come. Pretty amazing film for an indie, with an indie budget ($1.2mil). The number of rip-offs speaks volumes about the quality of this film. Again, the cast is top notch - Roth, Keitel, Buscemi, Madsen, Penn. Take your pick of the rest. Inglorious Basterds is the best thing he's done since the aforementioned two IMO. Kill Bills were fucking horrible. Story was thrown out the window in favour of cornball cliche and a bizarre, cartoonish interpretation of Oriental combat. Jackie Brown was, how shall I say...the afterbirth, the waste remnants of PF and RD.
I agree with MF's 1 and 2, but I think the Kill Bill movies are quality. I'm not sure if I'd put them above or below Inglorious.
The fights in Kill Bill were cartoonish in some parts as MF said but I still loved them, the fight between Beatrix and Elle Driver was awesome. Hell I even agree about Jackie Brown but I loved the acting in it, was the perfect cast. Thing with Reservoir Dogs I didn't like is the lack of any real involvement with characters like Mr Blue who said a couple of funny things in the tipping scene, Mr Pink was my favourite though, him and Mr White cracked me up.
A guy doing his doctorate in film at Uni once described Tarantino as a film DJ rather than a director. Thought it was an apt description of his style, Tarantino remixes old movie tropes from around the world and makes them into a hip new track.
