2014 State of Origin

That's why I wrote "Let's say if he'd played these series as the player he was in 06-07." Imagine his form in his last two years, extrapolated over those and the next 6, in Origin.

Extrapolate: extend the application of (a method or conclusion) to an unknown situation by assuming that existing trends will continue or similar methods will be applicable.

Lol, I know what extrapolate means. I use the term (correctly) regularly at work.

Anyway, I wasn't questioning your theory, mine was a legit query one how he would have fared if he did not have the neck injury.

Sorry. Honestly didn't mean to sound condescending. Just put it in there so everyone knew what I meant.

His 06 form at the start of the year was stellar but as the season wore on began to wain a bit. His 07 form? Well, he only played 3 games. He was still better than any halfback NSW have had at their disposal since, well, he Johns :p

We probably would have lost the 06 series if he played, maybe 07 too. The QLD side really began to hit their straps though throughout the next 3 series in 08, 09 and 2010.

    So perhaps 8 would be 6 :p

I'm going to say NSW would've won in 2006 & more than likely the last 2 series.

I didn't consider the last 2-3, because without the injury, he would have played til he was about 35-36. He is 39 now.

    He isn't Beaver :p

True. If Beaver played NSW would've now won 11 in a row.

Of all the words you have used over your time on this forum, surely that word is not one that requires elucidation. :p

Hypothetically speaking if Johns was at his peak and was of an age that would allow him to play from 06-13 and not lose any skills then NSW may have more than likely have won a few more series in comparison to the other squads had they played x number of games against the QLD teams during those periods. Throw in a Buderus at his peak as well over the period and that improves the chances but it is a mute point to argue this position. It's like arguing that if Wally Lewis was still playing today at his peak and maintained his dominance despite the change in the game, QLD would win another ten. We could go off on that tangent but like you pointed out it is impossible to prove such a hypothesis as the subjects are no longer capable of carrying out the role that we intend them to fulfill.

The amount of people trying to justify Pearce's inclusion for 2014 in the same way Daley did - by insisting that his club form post-Origin was stupendous and a sign of character after another torrid Origin series - is rather nauseating. I say nauseating and not dispiriting because as a QLDer, I will probably forego my sympathy for Carney and Mullen and the folly of picking neither, to see NSW crystallise Einstein's famous quote about insanity.

Even Mal Meninga indulges in this supposed call for loyalty on the basis of Easts' Grand Final win. I have to ask, as a long-time advocate of loyalty, just when does loyalty turn into intransigence? I think that point has come and gone.

Origin will be played over the same format (8 rounds) next year. Gotta lol at the calls of changing the format to reduce player burnout. As if trying to squeeze it into 6 rounds would improve that. It would make it worse if anything.

Personally, I agree with Hugh Hazard that Origin should occupy standalone weeks.

Yeah, absolutely. Under 20s Origin and the Pacific Test should both be three-game series on those weekends as well.

Without mid-week games we could then scrap the byes and have a 24 round season - same amount of club games, season would only go one week longer.

Stand alone weekends is far too sensical and obvious for the minds of rugby league

Surprised there's not a bigger push for it from the clubs actually, players wouldn't need too miss club games

There's factors that we as general fans don't seem to consider that the NRL have to tbf.

You can't just prolong the season by 3 weeks in Australia.

It'd eliminate the bye rounds, only 1 week

Then you'd still have players missing 1 game and backing up for 1 game which is exactly the same as what you'd get if you just shortened the SOO period to a 3 week period with 2 byes without having to add the extra week onto the start or end of the season and without having to stop the NRL competition.

The shortening of the duration of origin makes just as much sense to me.

    No you wouldn't.

They'd just play one game every weekend. You could still have the exact same amount of club games per team - 24 - with only one extra week in the season, and no-one having to miss any matches or back up.

I thought we all agreed origin just wouldn't be the same if it was played on a weekend. It'd be like having a pizza and movie night on a Monday.

Not that hard to grasp magic
