Finished reading Nelson Mandela: Long walk to freedom 2 weeks ago. Was pretty good to hear/read him tell his story and was quite different from the last Mandela biography I read. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't cover his time as leader of RSA in any depth at all, was half the reason I decided to read it to get a better look at the post prison life. Also finished Israel/Palestine: How to end the war of 1948 by Tanya Reinhart last night, pretty good look at the shonky way the Israelis have gone about peace talks over the years. Interesting to read a book from 10 years ago and still see that nothings really changed. Also a bargain as I bought it for $2 from a second hand book shop. Now reading Identity, Culture and the Postmodern world by Madan Sarup. Pretty seriously philosophical early, am about 20 pages in. Is a nice change from what I normally read though.
Thinking about starting Harry Potter from the beginning again. Maybe I'll notice some little details that I missed as a kid.
Why do you guys say the Malazan series is good? I'm 100 pages into the 1st book and I've had to put it down and find something else to read, I have no idea what's going on and there's characters left and right doing fuck knows what. Googled it and apparently this goes on for the whole book and it takes a few books to get into it and apparently books 6 to 10 are kind of boring. So I'm reading a 10 book series for 1 or 2 enjoyable books?
Book 1 is an absolute clusterfuck tbf. Never found any books between 2 and 10 boring at all, but it does still get pretty convoluted at times.
Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb again. Probably my favourite series that I've read. Can't wait for her next book. 2nd book's finale is just insanely good.
I've never read Malazan but alot of my friends and my parents have. If you don't like long winded epic series you won't enjoy them
I've been reading Stasiland by Anna Funder. I bought this after watching The Lives of Others a few years back, reading a few reviews and seeing a comment from Funder that the film was unrealistic as a Stasi Colonel would have been more closely monitored and in all likelihood spied on too. Anyway, it's interesting reading real stories from the ex-DDR and given the recent Snowden and GCSB revelations, it does remind me of Santayana's oft-heard quote "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
Meh I'll try it again after I'm done reading the 3rd book of the post-emperor death trilogy of Star Wars, 2nd book better be good
I was in the same situation as you tbh. Hated GotM and waited about 8 months before I picked up book 2 (Deadhouse Gates). I haven't looked back since. Memories of Ice (3), Midnight Tides (5) and The Bonehunters (6) are 3 of my favourite books ever. Admittedly, I wasn't a huge fan of Reaper's Gale (7) though. Apparently GotM was written like a decade before the rest of them and his writing definitely improved in those 10 years. Currently reading through Dust of Dreams (9) atm.
I started reading Guns, Germs, and Steel a while back and still only quarter of the way through due to time constraints. I've got Love in the time of Cholera sitting on my nightstand again since Marquez's passing away last week. Might actually read it this time.
Just received a big package of books: In the first circle - Solzhenitsyn Dirk Gently trilogy - Douglas Adams A canticle for Leibowitz - Miller The Postman - Brin Should keep me going for a while.
It's very interesting. I think Dan might have actually finished the whole and he wasn't overly impressed with some of his theories.
Only read one chapter for a uni subject last year, but from what I saw you're quite right - I wasn't overly impressed.
Bought these because of this post. Was expecting greatness and it was.... okay? There were some really interesting parts in all three books but the middle of the third books just dragged. There were so many pages of Fitz just whinging, with little development and pretty much what I would call filler in between. Kinda disappointed. About to start the Lies of Locke Lamora. Heard good things.
Damn I got it as well cause of Alec lol, haven't started it yet though. Finished the first book of Malazan series and 30% through the 2nd one... still not feeling it. Reading American Psycho in the meantime and love it.
Bought a book called falling off the edge, globalisation, world peace and other lies by Alex perry, really good read considering it cost me $3. Going to try and get into the Quran next, ordered it in last week. How many pages is it!
