There are people on here who think he's an option purely because of his aerial ability. Of course that makes it overrated. Even Folau wasn't picked with such emphasis on one aspect of his game.

  2. Magic AJ Parker

    That makes no sense.

You may think people's emphasis on aerial ability is disproportionate to what it should be but that doesn't by association make Tupou's aerial ability overrated.

  3. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

 That's one of the definitions of overrated.

  4. Cribbage RG Cribb

    You two are at cross-purposes.

When MF says "Tupou's aerial ability is over-rated", he's saying he thinks his ability to influence games with that ability is over-rated, not that he doesn't think Tupou is as good in the air as most people do.

  5. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

No, I'm saying both. I think the two are corollaries of each other.

  6. Cribbage RG Cribb

It's two separate arguments though really.

    > How important is aerial ability in general?
    > How good is Tupou in the air compared to other players?

Both contribute to whether or not he's a good selection. I think Magic agrees with you on the top line question but disagrees with you on the bottom one and therefore doesn't think the top line part is relevant to the crux of the disagreement he's having with you.

Firstly, I prefer the way you originally phrased it - "how much influence will his aerial ability have on the outcome of a match?"

With that in mind, I think it's a distinction without a difference. We disagree about the 2nd i.e. his ability in the air as compared to other players but it's precisely because of that difference that we also disagree about his ability to influence a game with it. To say that the first question is not relevant in arguments of overratedness is, I think, fatuous. In this context the two are inseparable afaic.

Daley must be so conflicted right now. He obviously believes in loyalty but if Pearce is stood down for Game 1, and the Blues lose he'll be backed into a corner with having to weigh loyalty to Adam Reynolds or whoever he picks versus his number 1 option which is obviously Pearce.

You look at the history of Origin and it's pretty clear chopping and changing in the halves is a bit of a death knell.

He must be the only bloke in NSW praying that Pearce is let off.

Regardless of the circumstances, Pearce's omission would make his many detractors happy as he is one of the most maligned players in the NRL, for reasons that are unclear.
During the five Origin series in which Pearce has represented NSW, no outstanding candidate has emerged to take his place and successive coaches Craig Bellamy, Ricky Stuart and Laurie Daley have all believed he was the best man for the job.
Critics were upset that Daley even came out before the start of last season and declared Pearce would be the Blues halfback, but he appeared to have finally demonstrated why so much faith had been invested in him over the years by helping the Roosters to the minor premiership and grand final double – feats that no other NSW halfback candidate has achieved since Matt Orford led Manly to the 2008 title.

I'm sorry, I understand the importance placed on what he did at the Roosters last year but FMD it counts for nothing when you've been a repeat failure at Origin level as he has been. Reasons that are unclear? He's fucking shit in rep footy yet he keeps walking into the job. That's why everyone hates him.

Would I have my house egged by CricSim members if I admitted that I'm not sure Pearce being out would be a good thing?

Pearce a terrible executor of last tackle plays in origin and Maloney imle looks to be better attacking the line and looking for a stab or grubbed kick. Jorris is a pretty good attacking kick chaser for the doggies and it hasn't worked at all well for NSW. I'd be very hesitant to add a high ball specialist outside him.

  12. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I can see an argument for it purely based on the fact that Reynolds is the likely replacement. Then again, as I've said, if all Reynolds offers is a quality kicking game, well that's better than Pearce has for quite a few of his matches.

  13. Hunter AD Hunt

I'm in the same boat. Firstly for the reason MF eluded to, secondly because if it's not A Reynolds it'd be J Reynolds, thirdly as I reckon Pearce might actually go half decent if the side contained Farah, Mullen and Hayne (at fullback).

I still think it's likely that Pearce will be bad regardless of who we pick around him. In fact, I think it's even likely either of the Reynoldses would outplay him. He's been so bad, so many times at Origin level that you just can't ignore it anymore.

That said, even though I think the likely scenario is Reynolds outplaying him, Pearce still has more chance of performing to a standard that would give us a reasonable chance of winning the series than Reynolds IMO. Pearce is likely to be terrible but Reynolds isn't likely to be that much better because he just doesn't offer much. I think for NSW to win a series with two games to be played in Queensland, we're going to need both halves to play well. Even if Adam Reynolds replicated what he did at club level - if he made the step up - he'd still not really be adding much. If Pearce replicated his club performances and performed to his ability - which is really unlikely at this point, but possible - that'd actually go a long way to making the side competitive.

Being surrounded by Mullen, Farah and Hayne at fullback (if it were to happen - it's unlikely too really) would if anything make me lean towards hoping Pearce is out. Reynolds could just play a role with his kicking game and general distribution, which he's far more likely to do a decent job of than Pearce. Pearce has a much higher ceiling though if we actually need something from the position.

Had my heart set on Carney/Mullen for so long that I'm all a bit thrown out now. No idea who I'd even pick to partner Mullen if I had a completely open choice anymore.

  15. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

Yeah neither do I. Mullen and Soward, Mullen and Campese, Mullen and Maloney, really don't strike me as quality. I'm pretty close to saying fuck it, just pick Brooks and hope he comes up trumps.

  16. Cribbage RG Cribb

I think I'd have to consider Hodkinson. And that very fact alone scares me; he's not even close to being good enough.

It's really why it was getting down to me not being that annoyed by Pearce playing again. Yeah he should have been dropped ages ago, yeah I'd drop him regardless and yeahhe's likely to be terrible ... but he actually has the ability to perform much better than he has so far; I don't really think anyone else does.

Fun fact: six of the top seven teams on the NRL ladder have all-NSW halves combinations. That's twelve NSW halves who play for top seven teams.

Our best half however plays for the team coming second last, and we're all sitting around in this thread trying to think of someone to play alongside him because our next best half - who plays for the team coming last - is out injured. And we're struggling.

What a strange world we live in.

  18. Maroon_Faithful M Faithful

I still think Campese has something to offer. As Julian never tires of saying, he's one bloke who should've been persisted with. It's hard to make a case for him now but I don't thinkhe's been too bad in a terrible side that has been relying on him so much.

  19. Cribbage RG Cribb

I can't even have a whinge about the stupid rule preventing us from picking from Foran, because he's injured anyway. :(

What's your gripe with Sutton crab man?
