Bit off topic from your actual suggestion, but as I was going through something similar in my head, it made me wonder what a CPL Australia team would look like - or if you like, "Would all of Katich, Ponting and Hussey make the current Australian side on merit if they came out of retirement?" I think they'd probably take one, maybe two, but definitely not all three. Which is interesting when you compare it to the state of Australia's batting 12-18 months ago.
I was actually going to post this question somehwere but didn't know where. Would be very interesting to see a CPL database Australian XI
Given it isn't aware Watson will break down if he bowls more than 10 overs in a day, or that Clarke's back is too fucked to bowl at all anymore, the lineup selecting program probably convince itself that batting Watson at 8 and leaving out Lyon was a good idea unless I told it the pitch was a turner.
I'm baffled that it'd think Watson's the best #8 in the country. Surely Harris/Starc/Patto/Johnson are more than capable on batting to bat #8 and while they're weaker than Watto batting isn't an elite prerequisite for #8 - and their bowling's much better.
Haha, I don't think it should be a shock to you that Australia have three better seamers than Lyon and that Watson is regarded as the better overall cricketer. Picking Lyon when you did was fine.. inspired even if you look at what happened to the teams that left their spinner until late.
He'll be fine. 100 + test wickets (I reckon 80% plus against the top 3 teams in the world) at 32 is awesome.
That's just a reflection of the way the selection/odds program works more than anything. If I was picking a side myself based on the simming averages, Lyon would definitely be in it.
Speirz, does it make you feel better about your Lyon pick if I reveal that even though O'Keefe took 41 wickets @ 20 this season in the Sheffield Shield and has a FC batting average of 27 or so, it still picks Lyon when I instead when I ask it for a team to play on a turner?
This sounds like gun news for our team, we have a lot of decent international records as opposed to some who have insane FC records. Guys like Fulton, McCullum and Vijay will be good value imo.
That sort of international focus just shows how criminal South Africa's non-selection of Philander was for a little while before he actually debuted too; he was actually in the CPL Database World XI before he'd played a Test. Massive effort. It was completely proven correct too. :P
Good value > Star players or anything. He'll be more than useful - won't tear up, but won't really be a liability imo.
Yeah I still don't actually get how that all worked. I think it had to do with SA's obsession with fast bowlers, but even so I don't know how he'd never got a chance in Tests given the political nature of SA cricket.
Interested to see what a Zimbo CPL XI would look like. I reckon they'd have to use a stop gap second opener. Something like: 1. Hamilton Masakadza 2. Murray Goodwin 3. Sean Williams 4. Brendan Taylor 5. Gary Ballance 6. Sean Ervine 7. Colin de Grandhomme 8. Glenn Querl 9. Keegan Meth 10. Kyle Jarvis 11. Ray Price Squad members: Tatenda Taibu Tendai Chatara Shingi Masakadza Dale Benkenstein Foster Mutizwa Vusi Sibanda Malcolm Waller
