If Berrigan's still around and kicking, probably him.

I'd consider Friend as well, but Queensland doesn't seem to like picking him for whatever reason, and he's probably too similar to Smith.

I really don't see the point in picking Berrigan. For starters he's playing either reserve grade or centre for the Warriors. He isn't even as good a hooker as Ballin or Friend IMO. And he'll be 34 next year.

Thurston? Not sure if he'd make a great utility though. We could always play Blair as utility and put Thurston into 5-8 but I think Blair would be more use at 5-8.

Undoubtedly Berrigan IMO, unless winning the series isn't what you're trying to achieve.

  6. Flack SA Flack

    Travis Burns.

  7. LukeTyson L Tyson

    Milton Thaiday.

He's not as good of a hooker as Ballin or Friend, but he's certainly a better utility IMO. Obviously hasn't been close to form this year, but that shouldn't count him out yet. Really depends on if you want the same sort of player as Cronk or if you want a second rower/centre though.

Yeah he isn't as good at hooker as other blokes, but he can play centre, halfback, 5/8th, etc. which others can't.

Silly thread with such an obvious answer.

lol and what if he's in reserve grade next year?

Really only need him to cover hooker. If there is any injuries in the halves I'd say Smith would slot in.

Do we want someone who'll play a few minutes at hooker to give Smith a rest?
Or do we want someone who can cover a wide range of positions, and provide impact while on the field?

  14. Julian BJ Taylor

    Burns.

Can't see why they wont be able to do both ?

That'd probably be better for Queensland than if he was in first grade, because he'd at least get a go at hooker there. :p

Didn't you say that Mogg would be your second reserve back for Queensland at one stage, even if he was in reserve grade, because of what he's proven before? Berrigan's proved a lot more than Mogg for Queensland IMO and there's far less competition for the role (you don't have anyone else at all who is primarily a scoot-based dummy half who can cover other positions).

If we have an injury in the centres, Ballin sure as hell won't be able to cover it. Then you'd have to make a fuckton of changes all round and pretty much have everyone play in a position that they haven't been training in for the week and a bit.

Beyond Berrigan, I think Queensland's next best utility is Harrison. He could play five-eighth, hooker or centre in a pinch and I'd back him to play centre to a better standard than the supposed centre-coverers in Cooper and Gillett.

If Berrigan isn't going to be considered, I'd just pick the next best second rower - a specialist impact player of some sort. If Harrison's going to be used as the utility then you just need someone to cover Harrison's normal role should someone get injured, and maybe offer something a bit different in Queensland are behind. Gillett IMO.

I think Harrison could cover centre as well if not better than Gillett though. What if Smith got injured? Would Gillett be able to cover that?

I actually agree he's a better utility because he covers more positions. Thing is though, with Harrison and Myles and Parker in the side, it seems completely unnecessary. The most likely scenario, by far, is said player coming on and playing hooker or lock. You can't tell me Berrigan is better suited to such a role than Ballin.
