    Could feed of the NRL hatred but would have to make it at a seperate time or else it'd be irrelevant.

    GWS and Gold Coast had a fair few zone selections so you'd hope a few of them come along.

    Yeh agree with this. With 18 teams teams a playing each other twice really isn't feasible. Would impact on the overall quality of play as well as fatigue properly set in in the final quarter of a 34 game season.

    It is funny how AFL fans and NRL fans are in almost unanimous agreement that clubs should either play each other twice or play each other once, and not in between, and yet both codes give us this in between shit every year without fail. It's obviously for marketing reasons - the clubs/players would never stand for a 30+ week season, not to mention the ground clashes with other sports and how hot it'd be early season, and the codes would make a fraction of what they do now if we had a 15-17 week season.. but the inequity is pretty biting. I guess having an IMO absurd number of teams make the finals every year (although 8/18 isn't that bad for the AFL actually) kind of ensures that no-one who really deserved to win the thing is going to not qualify for the finals based on an unfavourable draw, but still.

    The media is getting pretty mouthy about the fixture, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it reduced to at least 20 games in the foreseeable future with clubs having a say in who they play twice (rivalries etc) so get more profit and stop them whining.

    I like 22 even though it isn't equal, just because that's the way it's always had been. 17 would feel weird.

    Brought up SoO as the would make up for it.

    Won't happen in the next 5 years. TV stations paid for 22 games/23 rounds and that's what they'll get.

    When we end up with 20 clubs, a 19 game season wouldn't be bad.

    Tasmania definitely gets the next side, would love to see two Tassie sides but you'd have to wait at least 3-5 before bringing in the second one.

    I have no great beef with the system the way it is now (for either code). Generally, as you say, the right teams end up playing finals footy, and the teams that play the GF are almost always the teams people recognise are best over the course of a season, no matter their H & A draw. Yeah it stinks for some teams but the fans are definitely winners because of it (along with the sponsors etc). I struggle to find anything bad about the chance to see more games like those we see from Cats v Hawks, or Collingwood v Cartlon every other season.

    The only way a complete season of playing each team works imo is if you have a first past the post winner, and scrap the finals series.

    18 teams.

    Play each team once.

    Split the league up into 3 'conferences' based on final ladder position last year.

    You play each other team in that conference twice.

    22 rounds.

    Only issue is 6th tanking for 7th or something. Perhaps have an NBA style weighted lottery to decide the conferences.
