New Zealand is looking insanely strong. Slade putting real pressure on Cruden and I'd take him because he can cover 10,12,wing and 15. Reckon a large chunk of the squad is already in place which is great to see. Outside Backs: Dagg, Smith, Savea, Jane Midfielders: Nonu, Smith Flyhalfs: Carter, Barrett Scrumhalfs: Smith, Perenara, Kerr Barlow Backrowers: Read,McCaw,Messam,Cane Locks: Whitelock, Rettalick, Romano Hookers: Coles, Mealamu Props: Franks,Franks, Woodcock, Faumuina, Crockett leaves 2 forward spots; Luatua vs Kaino Hooker 2 back spots Cruden vs Slade midfield option (likely SBW)
NZ almost always go into the tournament as favs, tbf. Rightly so. Suspect 91 & (maybe) 03 were the only exceptions, and even then there was a fag paper between the Wobblies and NZ in former and Us & NZ in the latter beforehand.
This. Australia seem to be one of the better road teams going as far as these tournaments go. NZ not so much. Best thing that can happen to us between now and then is that we lose a tri nations tournament. We tend to get blown away by teams who rise to the occassion against us. I was in NZ in 2007 when we lost. Strangely there was no national day of mourning. Just bitter bitter moaning and whining about the reffing. I was embarassed by it. We lost fair and square. Our team must be quite old by now hang on brb McCaw will be 34 how long can the man keep playing. I don't really remember older guys in the ABs before. Conrad will be 33 Nonu 32 Mealamu will be 36 will be surprised if he will still be around next year. Dan Carter 33 - I don't think that matters for a fly half, but with his injuy proneness he won't be playing (yes I know we have good replacements - but they lack his experience - and both of them need as many games as they can get under their belt this year - don't even pick Carter if he comes back this year IMO)
That's the core minus Read. Every other position is relatively young only position potentially not is the props, it's a great mix of experience and x factor
Fiji have joined group A, along with England, Wales and Australia. Ince they've beaten Italy and smashed Tonga this summer it looks like the tough group just got tougher
Current IRB Rankings: Group A Australia - 3 England - 4 Wales - 6 Fiji - 10 Qualifier - 26 Group B South Africa - 2 Samoa - 9 Scotland - 8 Japan - 10 United States 18 Group C New Zealand - 1 Argentina - 12 Tonga - 13 Georgia - 15 Africa 1 - 30 Group D France - 7 Ireland - 5 Italy - 14 Canada - 17 Romania - 16 Averages Group A: 9.8 Group B: 9.4 Group C: 14.2 Group D: 11.8
Big incentive to win the group to avoid (in all probability) the Saffers in the QFs. Who's the qualifier likely to be? Repercharge side, I believe?
There's a playoff tournament between Uruguay, Hong Kong, Russia and then whichever one of Namibia, Madagascar, Kenya and Zimbabwe finish second in the African qualifying group. My guess would be Russia.
Just had a look at what happened to Jacques Burger and it turns out he's not involved unfort. Would be the best player by a distance in that comp. Also found these matches are being shown live on the IRB website, if anyone's interested.
Weren't we all (except the commentators) They got whupped by Zimbabwe, 57-22. Got a good crowd in again though.
Wow, interesting. I imagine Zim could be a shout tbh, they seem to breed a surprisingly large number of players which SA steal. Must have a somewhat respectable rugby infrastructure (in an african context).
