If he practised it from that spot all the time then yeah, sure. I think you under-estimate how much kicking is about repeating a learned skill, though. He'd rarely bother practising kicking from that spot and, predictably, he kicked it as if he was taking it from closer. It was on line the whole way. If he'd taken it 2m closer it was a goal.
Yeah, without knowing his routine I imagine most league kickers practise from pretty consistent distances and angles, rather than all over the shop like union kickers have to. Although a surprisingly large amount seem to be able to kick it regularly from within five of the tryline and out on the touchline. I can't imagine a more useless skill.
