People who know nothing about rugby league

A thread dedicated to unintentionally insightful comments about rugby league by people who know practically nothing about it.

 

Watching Game 1 of Origin today, at about the 6 minute mark, my partner who knows nothing about rugby league comments:

Nate Myles. You’ve been called out. Lift your running game.

 

You're doing it wrong. This belongs in the "dumb things said by people who should know better" thread, which is every other thread on this forum.

 

Perhaps he was implying that I know nothing about RL.

Either that or he can't read, which is a fair bet.

 

No but you could take that as sarcasm. He may not have cared to fulfill the criteria on which the thread is predicated, in order to post it anyway. He loves to twist the knife.

Or, as we all know, he just mistook the purpose of the thread and/or can't read.

 

That's rich coming from someone who thought he should've been on the wing all these years. i'm still waiting for the outbreak of self-criticism on the part of those who advocated that terrible idea.

As it happens I, like most people, did have Hayne in my team before this year's series.

 

I didn't say otherwise. I was contrasting it to your jeer about me not wanting him in the side at all.

They certainly would've been better off playing someone other than a bloke who was Eric Grothe Snr in attack, and Eric Grothe Jnr in defence, on the wing. But I see you're all too incurious to actually go back and watch the matches from around 09 to see if he really was the huge liability that someone who has, knows him to have been.

 

Brett Morris was a much better defender both back then and now. He had his troubles in Origin early on; a lot of that can be put down to the way he and Cooper were instructed to defend, which happened to be very dissimilar to how they defended at club level together.

Hayne was just terrible. His defence amounted to trying to take an intercept firstly, and if that didn't work, attempting a Cumberland throw. In Game 1, 2009 he was responsible for more QLD line breaks than Nathan Merritt was in Game 2 last year. But because only one of them lead to a try, and because Hayne was clearly NSW's best outside back with the ball he's been praised ever since, and a lot of people who should know better (not you obviously) continued picking him.
