Oi. Why the fuck do you get points for a bye?

Is the NRL the full quid?

    Who cares?

At the end of the day it doesn't make a difference.

So that you can make better comparisons on the points tables with teams having played 1 game more or less than others.

I care. Obviously. Why the fuck do you think I made a thread about it?

If you give points for the bye, it gives a false impression at the bottom of the ladder. Teams at the bottom lose more than they win so the assumed win as such when a team doesn't play skews the ladder.

If you don't give points for the bye, however, it gives a false impression at the top of the ladder. Teams at the top win more than they lose so they were to have played that week, it's more likely they would've won than lost.

At the end of the season it obviously makes no difference at all, but the logic behind it is the idea that people care more about the top of the ladder being accurate than the bottom mid-season.

I like to sort the ladder by win% (with a draw counting as a half a win) mid-season when some teams have had more byes than others, but I'm a nerd.

It's the principle. Ask any Melbourne player - you don't realise how special points are until the NRL takes them away. They're like a flower that needs to be gently curated in order to blossom. You should only ever get points if you win a game of rugby league. The draw AND the bye can fuck right off.

Why were Melbournes bye points stripped? How did them being over the cap get them those 4 ponts?

Obviously it's just a convention now, but I vaguely recall reading somewhere that the original idea behind teams getting points for byes came from leagues with odd numbers in.

If a league has an odd number of participants the team without a fixture in the first week was playing catch up from the get go through no fault of their own, hence the points for the bye.

    Here's an idea:

There's an even number of NRL sides, so fuck the bye off all together!

Then you just have even more games affected by origin, I think the byes are good. Gives the players a chance to freshen up mid-season and limits the amount of games affected by origin.

I actually don't think the current set up is fair. Bring in 2 split rounds, with origin 3 on a stand alone weekend and screen some pacific cup games, under 20's origin, residents game etc.

    Stand alone weeks for origins.
I don't know how we don't have this already.

We get one for the test and shitty/cuntry which no one cares about, but arguably the 3 biggest games of te year are crammed in around club games, it literally makes 0 sense.

That's a different argument, byes serve their purpose well atm.

    It's insane really.

That's like saying you can drive with your knees if you cut your hands off.
While technically true, it's still fucking idiotic that you're in that position.

I don't get why some byes are on the week after origin where the players aren't even missing.

No its not, its like saying I'm not arguing hypothetical solutions I was only disagreeing with his assertion made on byes in the current climate.

Because it is more likely to result in injuries playing so soon after Origin.
