Yep, this is it. i don't know where Magic and GYR's families are from but my old man's family are from South Coogee since the 50s and they're all convinced it was always the large majority South Sydney. Easts were normally Bondi back into the city.
My direct family lived in Paddo but my 2nd Uncle who grew up in Coogee (lives in WA now) still talks about how he grew up in the Eastern Subrubs. I doubt there's many who live in Coogee and don't think it's in the Eastern Suburbs, the State, City and Council all recognise Coogee as in the Eastern Suburbs. Only the geographically challenged and NSWRL seem to think otherwise. The funny part being that the borders were changed in the 50s because the Roosters were deemed to have an unfair amount of juniors compared to Souths who at the time had so few.
And Easts changed their name to align more aptly with their area IMO. Sydney City out to Bondi (via all the snotty areas) is Easts area IMO. The working class (and several houso areas) South of Coogee are undoubtedly Souths areas. Fuck the name, they just are and always have been.
That is the same stadium proposed from like 6 months ago, by the time this actually gets of the ground it may look nothing like that.
Looks like the Government is going to buy back the lease for ANZ stadium which voids the restrictions on a new 65k seater stadium being built at Moore Park. On one hand it feels needless to knock down NSW's best rectangular football stadium and I'll be upset to see the SFS go but on the other hand finally having a gun rectangular stadium for SOO & Grand Finals FTW!
Where will Souths and Easts play if/when they're tearing down the SFS and building a new stadium? SCG?
It's unlikely they'll build the new stadium where the SFS currently sits. Most likely it'll be built where the carpark and training grounds currently are with the SFS being turned into a multi level underground car park or entertainment centre. So it could probably be spared during construction of the new stadium if they time it right. So long as they don't give two fucks about Sydney FC games. Souths are no sure things to move back to Moore Park either. Their demographic has changed a lot in the last decade and they've never had a great relationship with the SCG Trust.
Under this proposed development the stadium wouldn't be run by the SCG Trust. I'd be surprised if they didn't move back especially since ANZ would be owned by the government. Not sure what sort of money would be given to teams as incentive to play there like they do now.
Why would we need a new stadium instead of the SFS? It doesn't seem worth all the money you would spend. The priority should be a 30k stadium out west, IMO.
