Has your Origin team changed after that series?

Yes for me, Watmough proved himself and turned out to be a ****ing gem. Before I had him below Laffranchi.

    1. Gidley/Stewart (As long as whoever doesn't get picked isn't considered for other positions.)
    2. Hayne
    3. Cooper
    4. Jennings
    5. Monaghan
    6. Barrett
    7. Kimmorley
    8. Poore
    9. Ennis
    10. Weyman
    11. Hindmarsh
    12. Gallen
    13. Watmough

    14. Wing
    15. TLL
    16. Lewis
    17. Creagh/Some prop to strengthen pack.

  2. Wilson SB Wilson

Yeah, I've also come around to Watmough. I think Hindmarsh is shit out of luck now, and I wouldn't pick him in my team. Creagh has got to start, was our best forward this series.

    1. Gidley
    2. Hayne
    3. Cooper
    4. Jennings
    5. Monaghan
    6. Barrett
    7. Kimmorley
    8. Poore
    9. Ennis
    10. Weyman
    11. Creagh
    12. Gallen
    13. Watmough

    14. Wing
    15. TLL
    16. Lewis
    17. Douglas

That'd be my squad, but I'm accepting the fact that LOD will be picked over Gallen most likely.

Yeah I've replaced Waterhouse with Watmough (I'm still sceptical of him TBH, particularly in defence, but you can't drop him after that sort of game) and Wallace with either Barrett or Kimmorley; I don't care which one.

I knew before the series that there was every chance I'd want Wallace gone by the end of it, but I never thought I'd actually want Watmough in the team. :p

Stewart, if he is found not guilty (what's the situation with that at the moment?), will definitely be in the side.

Just think that Gidley's style doesn't really fit well at Origin level.

  5. Cribbage RG Cribb

Oh, and adding to this, I think Kite's played and failed enough times to declared the bloke an Origin failure providing we have players actually performing well at club level to take his place, so I'd have Douglas in his place.

  6. Wilson SB Wilson

Works both ways though. If you put Stewart in the side, he's obviously the better fullback than Gidley, but it means Gidley will shift somewhere else in the team. Most likely in the starting team, which would be in the halves. So him being fullback, even though he's not the greatest we've got, it's better for the team if he is.

  7. Fungus K Fung

Reckon there's any chance of them dropping him as captain altogether? Like you, I don't want him in the halves as he is no where near good enough at this level. Maybe as fill in 5/8th at club level (since Smith is considering that with Mullen injured), but definitely not at Origin.

What I want to see is probably Kimmorley to partner Campese/Mullen next year.

  8. Cribbage RG Cribb

While the selectors would have obviously had reservations about changing the captain mid-series, I don't think it'll bother them too much at the start of a new series, particularly given we lost and Gidley was poor. If he's not at fullback he shouldn't be anywhere near the team, IMO.

I was kind of 50/50 about whether I wanted Gidley or Stewart at fullback before this series, but while I think a lot of the criticism of Gidley is over-the-top, and that people suggesting that Hayne, Patten or McKinnon are better options should be shot, Gidley was poor this year and Stewart should be ahead of him if he's fit and.. free. Gidley's ability to play positions other than fullback is vastly over-rated and although I know the selectors disagree with me about that, I don't think he'll be in the team next year unless Stewart is in gaol or Wing goes to rugby union.

Don't think they'd drop the captain mid-series, but as I said, given we lost and Gidley was poor, I don't think changing the captain for a new series will worry them too much. They'll probably talk it up as a positive "cleansing" thing or something.

  10. Fungus K Fung

Works especially well if the selectors and the coach is part of the clean. :p

I reckon the only reason Gidley is behind Bellamy is because he knows that he'll get the best chance at starting if it's Bellamy coaching.

    Soward > Campese and Mullen.

  12. Cribbage RG Cribb

You just made a borderline call saying that someone was better than a Newcastle player and a Canberra player. Julian and Fungus have smoke coming out their ears AWS.

  13. Fungus K Fung

    Kimmorley and Soward?

Na, but I wouldn't mind seeing if he is up for it at the level.

And lol at Rob. I don't always defend my team. If they are shit, they are shit.

    Thing with Mullen is inconsistency.

  14. Wilson SB Wilson

Meh. Campese is the second most over-rated player on here behind Monaghan. He had an epic gun run for 7 rounds last year and he's done sweet **** all since and he's been labelled as some kind of saint. I'm not buying into it. He's a good player, yeah, but it's very few and far between it seems.

  15. Wilson SB Wilson

Yeah, it's the problem with all three of them. Although Soward has been the gunnest player this year from day dot, so if he's in similar form come time next year.. well it's dead set no brainer.

  16. Cribbage RG Cribb

There's no doubt that Soward has looked better in attack this year than Campese and Mullen, but you have to take it into context. It's a lot easier to look good playing on the back of a platform set by Michael Weyman and Justin Poore who are organised by Ben Hornby and throwing balls to Matt Cooper and Brett Morris.. than trying to do so playing out of position on the back of Mark Taufua and Chris Houston, or with the support of Marc Herbert and the expert hole-running of Nigel Plum and Jarrod Croker.

We saw what Soward was like in an average team last year - he was quite Mullen-like in his inconsistency. The Dragons weren't exactly shit either; they were just average. Campese has produced performances similar to what Soward is now in a much worse team than what Soward has to support him at the moment.

And then, of course, there's defence. Contrary to popular belief I don't think Soward's defence is categorically not good enough to play Origin, but he's a below average defender and that certainly counts against him when you put him up against Campese who is one of the best tacklers in the game.

What a lot of NSW supporters fail to realise is that Origin isn't about how good you've looked this year or what your 'form' is like; it's about how good you actually are and what you can do against good opposition in a game where everyone's weaknesses will be exemplified. You don't get a head start on the scoreboard for having lots of players from well-performing teams in your side and you can't paper over technical flaws.

In saying that you think he performs better in a better team wouldn't that make him play extremely well in origin?
He has seriously been the best 5/8 this year and if that doesn't warrant some strong consideration for the origin spot then I have lost all faith in the selection process

He's playing well in a team that is better than the opposition significantly more times than not. That description doesn't fit the New South Wales team at the moment.

That's why it's relevant. It's not the players he's playing with as an absolute concept; but the players he's playing with in comparison to their opposition.

I understand all this, but Campese has only pulled that one hot streak out of his arse and thats it. Really, if he doesn't show anything like that brilliance, with consistency, by the time next season, his name should not be mentioned. Right now, I wouldn't pick him over Mullen and Soward, Barrett too for that matter. He's done nothing apart from that one awesome spell, and people are ****ing clinging to that shit for so ****ing long.

Spot on Rob, that is why Campese is the #3 5/8 in Australia, IMO.
