Fullback is the easiest position to look good in ~ Jazz

Right now he is - not long ago Billy was the best in the world, Hayne was the best in the world... Thurston was best in the world...

He's in a purple patch at the moment, but I think he's a historically 'lazy' footballer. If he wants to be known as the best in the world, he has to carry this form for longer than ten rounds.

He's carried this "purple patch" of form since the Bunnies wisened up and moved him to fullback

Been doing this for a lot longer than 10 rounds.

I was a firm "no" until you put it like that; it's a hard question to answer. Of course I'd love to say "make 40 tackles per game in the front line" but it just shows I have a natural bias to the hooker position. Then again, if Inglis was playing the perfect winger's game (which I'm sure he would if he playing wing every week) and you asked people what more he needed to do, they'd probably say he needed to play a more influential position than wing, and it's essentially the same logic.

Cameron Smith is a key member in Melbourne's ruck defence, Melbourne's structure, Melbourne's go-forward and Melbourne's creativity. He's in a position that allows him great influence over many facets of the game and he does it all with aplomb. It would be very difficult for me to ever think an outside back was more valuable than him. Perhaps if Inglis became an elite fullback in defence like Smith is at the ruck I'd consider it, but I'd still probably favour Smith. Inglis actually is fast improving in defence at fullback and I don't think I'll favour him any time soon.

There's not a lot Inglis can do to change my mind. It's not a matter of keeping it up for a longer period, being more consistent etc - I just straight up think Cameron Smith offers more to a side than a fullback in Inglis's mould really could.

I should stress that I do think Inglis is #2 though.

I wonder if the bullet will ever be bitten regarding his position at rep level. The easy option is to just keep him at centre anyway, especially since we have a dearth of top class centres in the game at the moment, but he's clearly a better fullback than Slater now and he has a much bigger impact on the game from fullback. I wouldn't have any qualms replacing Slater because I think his representative performances have been vastly over-rated across time, especially in Test football, but it'd leave Queensland and Australia a centre short.

No way, he's much better this year than he was last year.

  9. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

That's true........but that's not to say he wasn't outstanding last year as well.

Someone said they thought he should have won the dally M instead of Barba

    I agree......

I love Cameron Smith.....I really do

    but

if you were to put Smith in a team devoid of all attacking weapons whatsoever .....and although great as he is, Cam Smith won't get you as many points on his own as Inglis would.

If the situation were the same for Inglis he would still score points/win games. All he has to do is get the ball.......

and he seems to be doing it at will at the moment. What it is now, the last 3 or 4 games he has had a direct influence in the outcome?

Barring injury (and I kick myself for even saying that) Inglis is only going to get better and better and .....

I still strongly advocate him moving Slater out of fullback for QLD.

    Couldn't disagree more.

Maybe not but Inglis still needs territory and momentum to do what he does so he'd not be nearly as effective behind a consistently beaten forward pack, or an indisciplined, error ridden side that never had good field position. The thing about Smith is that even if he was playing in a side with an average pack and average halves, he'd get it over the advantage line and control the game, putting them in good field position.

And that's only half the game. Cameron Smith adds much, much more in defence than Inglis.

Hmm, I agree almost entirely and personally I'd still have Smith as the best player in the world. I just thought it was interesting that whereas some people name a new best player every week, other fans (generally the more intelligent ones) tend to have this natural inertia about naming a new best player in the world, such that a player like Smith has to lose the tag through horrible play rather than another player earning it through consistent brilliance. The line about "building a team" is too easy to trot out in Smith's defence and I think it can prevent people from seriously evaluating whether Smith is still the best in the world.

It was mostly the realisation that all the excuses that I used in the past for denying Inglis the mantle were no longer as valid and yet I still can't bring myself to place him ahead of Cam Smith.

  14. Jazz NC Smith

Pretty damn long purple path tbh. He does have the tag as a 'lazy' footballer but I think it is also time to reassess that considering the efforts he has put in over the last 18 months. He turned up to the pre-season in great shape and has started off 2013 where he left off in 2012. I think there is a fair case to be made that he has finally got his head screwed on right and matured as a player.

I can't see Queensland or Australia doing it anytime soon, nor should they imo. Slater is still an excellent fullback and a line up of Slater with Inglis and Tate/Hodges is still a fair bit better than Inglis with Tate and Hodges. I'd love to see him play at fullback though.

  15. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

At the end of the day they both play vastly different roles.......it's really hard to split/compare the greatness between them.

Smith is a great footballer......Inglis is a great weapon.

If I had to chose to pick one to sign up for my team........I'd go with Inglis. I think even with an average half & dummy-half/hooker (thinking about Brisbane) Inglis could make you a top 4 team.

  16. Mr Fourex MR Fourex

So you don't think Inglis is only going to get better......?

Disagree until another QLD eligible (:tongue_002:) centre puts his hand up. Until then:

    1. Slater
    3. Inglis

    is better than

    1. Inglis
    3. Some shit cunt
