What actually prompted this topic was when I reflected back on who I thought was the best player in the game 2-3 years ago. Basically since ~2007 the answer has always been Cameron Smith or Johnathan Thurston for fairly obvious reasons. Smith is the most well rounded player in the game; he’s crafty, smart, a great organiser and leader and a superb defender. While Thurston has an impeccable record for Queensland and Australia and is the most consistently creative player in the game. During most of that time my comments and the comments of many others were something along of the lines of: Inglis is a great player and easily the most talented player I’ve seen, the only issues in his game are his defence and his inconsistency. If he could fix those he would be the best in the world.

These days I still wouldn’t say his defence in the centres is great but it has certainly improved. His technique was always good but in the past he just let his opposite number get on his outside shoulder too easily. Now he is less of a liability in defence and when he plays at fullback he is actually quite safe and reliable. Moreover, since his move to fullback he has actually become more dangerous than he was in the three-quarter line and he has been very consistent for Souths. His form through 2012 and 2013 has been excellent and sustained and imo he was the player of the year in 2012 rather than Barba.

So considering that many of the reasons for originally denying him the title are less valid, do you think it is time to break up the Smith/Thurston partnership and recognise Inglis? If not, what do you think he still needs to do.

He's definitely up there. Smith is still the best player IMO purely for his leadership. You could build a club around Smith, I don't think you could around Greg. That being said, he's the most dangerous player in the comp IMO

Smith is still quite easily the best player in the world, and that won't change until he retires.

  4. Tartmaster AJ James

    This.

  5. azzal AJ O'Neill

Agreed with what people have been saying, with Smith you can build a club around him.

I hate when the sharks have to go against Inglis, its scary seeing him get the ball.

  6. Jazz NC Smith

Rabs just called it. Best player in the world.

  7. Tartmaster AJ James

Rabs says that about like 6 cunts though

On what basis? I know a lot of people will object but I believe that Souths have done that to a certain extent. Take Inglis out of the Souths lineup or put him back in the centres and they don't make the finals imo, put him in and they are premiership contenders.

  9. Jazz NC Smith

Oh I think it will be a few weeks before he crowns another player as the best in the game.

  10. Alec AD Funkotron

He's the best fullback and centre. Maybe that's enough.

Smith is the best footballer. As in skills and knowledge of how a game needs to be built IMO.

But Inglis is the best player. He can do anything.

Perhaps I should rephrase, you could build a team around both but, IMO, the team with Smith would be more successful. Smith is the whole package. Attack, defence but most importantly, leadership. The '08 GF is a great example. Manly were red hot for sure but do Melbourne lose if Smith's on the field? Possibly, but not by so much IMO. Inglis could of course develop these traits, but he's not there atm.

  13. Magic AJ Parker

Not even the best Greg in the world.

  14. Wilson SB Wilson

Lol Souths would still easily make the finals. Their pack would carry them there with ease.

  15. Cribbage RG Cribb

They'd finish 7-10 IMO. Their pack is becoming a bit over-rated for mine.

Yeah, Sam Burgess is gun. Yeah, George Burgess is getting there too. And yeah, they boast a stack of good middle third defenders who hold down the fort. But Asotasi is barely first grade standard, Tyrrell is being completely carried as a front rower and they aren't going anything in attack out of Clark, Peats or Lowe either, as well as they can hold the game together in defence.

It's a very good pack, but it's not a pack that's going to win a stack of games on its own with some direction and creativity around it. I don't think it's as good as the Titans pack or the Sharks pack and both those teams will struggle to make the eight this year due to backline weaknesses.

Nah, I don't think so. Their outside backs are average at best and their spine is a lot weaker without Inglis. Sutton and Luke are creative but unreliable and erratic and Reynolds is just there for his kicking/organsiing. And as Cribb said, I think their pack is a bit overrated. Without Inglis I think they'd be in a similar position to what they were 2-3 years ago.

Yeah agree with much that's been said already. Smith is still No.1 but Id have GI in 2nd now. I obviously watch him at club level every week closely. He's such a complete package. Speed and accelaration equal to anyone in the comp but he's got that plus the frame of a 2nd rower essentially. The most impressive part for mine is how well he is/has been running games out since his move to custodian. He's better positionally at fullback than anyone in the game IMHO.

Top point about our pack too however I do believe wed be defo 5-8 finishers now even if G.I wasn't at Souths. Asotasi is declining rapidly and I have him in NNRL but honestly the sooner we start running a pack such as the following the better imo.

    8.G.Burgess
    9.Luke
    10.Lima
    11.McQueen
    12.Teo
    13.S.Burgess

    14.Clark
    15.Lowe
    16.Tyrell
    17. L.Burgess (T.Burgess till back)
