That's actually a solid idea. Though the logistics could end up being a pain, trying to get a team/staff to those locations and back while factoring in airline timetables/training/recovery etc. NRL could buy/lease a plane I guess. Would allow them to have complete control over transport and have more games at the Pacific Locations. They could paint it up in the team colours for promotional purposes, then lease it to airlines during the offseason like Alliance Airlines do.
South Island Kea. Probably no chance of getting an expansion slot, but great to see this. https://southislandkea.com/ David Moffett overseeing the bid, apparently.
I wouldn’t say no chance, PVL has openly talked about wanting 20 teams and to align it with the new TV deal. PNG team looks like an absolute lock given the political interest from Australia & America. He said this on NZ recently “We certainly wouldn’t be looking at anything on the North Island but if opportunities arose on the South Island, we would look at them.”
A PNG team would have to be based in Townsville and from there take a % of their home games to png. Nobody's going to choose to live there.
Is there much talk of a 20th team? Before the Bears got up i loved the idea some kind of de merger between Tigers and Maggies, Have a genuine Western Suburbs team, with the Balmain portion pissing off to Perth with a coupla games at Leichardt. Was never happening but think the its an under served geography in the south west of sydney, a bit like how ripped off Wollongong area is only getting half an acknowledgement (if that) with the Dragons set up
PNG 1. 2. Alex Johnston 3. 4. Zac Lomax 5. Alex Johnston 6. Jarome Luai 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Connor Watson 15. 16. Matty Lees 17.
I don't see how this can be taken seriously. 10 years guaranteed tax free? If they win any comps, huuuge fucking asterisk.
I really fear for the Bears. They've botched thos pretty hard so far, the Dolphins battled to get any marquee men an they were a club ina great area, traditional league heartland and had one of the truly great coaches. Bears on the other hand are a recycled franchise rather than a truly west identity, Mal's a bit of a goose, players will be a long way from home and I don't know how much love there is for the sport, all the while having the Chiefs up any offers over their head. Perth's one of my favourite cities though so I think in time they'll have some kind of appeal. But that long flight every second week without the added tax free sweetener could be a hard sell. I do think PNG will be a weird one where a lot of players will head over for a pay packet for 2-3 seasons, but compound life and hvaing wives/kids over there will get old quick. I think it will really hit the number of one club players we see.
If they don't win 3-4 comps in the 10 years it's a massive failure. I see them dominating the comp for 10 years, and then folding when all players bail once tax comes in. PNG by far the worst thing PVL has done.
