How should contracts be determined?

1. Contracts should be completely as they are in real life

50.0%
2. Contract lengths should be as they are in real life, but salary determined based on draft pick

35.7%
3. Salaries should be determined by draft pick, and contract length randomised

14.3%

I've still got to build the free agency sim. Should be fairly easy to do, though. Obviously I don't know the exact details until I've done that, but I wouldn't expect a top five player to ever go to a 1-2/10 market team unless it's their home town, for example. I'll try and factor in things like how well the team is doing, whether they're championship contending, hometown discount, current team discount, and obviously player/team options, contract length & money.

If players go undrafted for 240 picks, then I'm not sure you'd have proper reason to complain if they go to some other team in free agency.

One other thing I'll need to work out is when to retire players though. That might just end up being a judgement call.

It's not that they haven't been picked would be the issue, it's the fact that say Kobe ($25 mill) for example if went unpicked, could be picked up by a high appeal team for say $10 mill or whatever and thus a bargain - something lower appeal teams get disadvantaged by. Obviously in seasons to come that's not an issue as their scouts balance it, just straight after the draft seems a bit unfair. That being said it probably won't be an issue.

Regarding retirement just make it random IMO. Like say from X age onwards there's a chance that they could retire. E.g 30 onwards, at 30 there's a 10% chance, at 31 there's a 15% chance etc. they retire assuming they're off contract.

If you want the contracts to be based on draft position then surely contract length should also be fixed as well. The problem is when you decide to go with one but not the other.

Why is that an issue?

There's no way of 'fixing' contract lengths apart from randomising.

No salary cap. :ninja:

If it is just fixed then people can pick players based on their skill and potential alone. Once you introduce contract length into it people will need to look into how long their contracts are, which is a very arbitrary level of complexity. If you're going to add that complexity you might as well make salaries part of the picking process as well. At least that's something that many people actually look at in real life (x player is overpriced, y player is underpaid).

It also means that once the contracts expire you won't have someone going from $5mil to asking for $25mil because they happen to be picked lower than what their contract demands would otherwise be.

It's not arbitrary though. It's essentially saying I'd like to have everything fixed based on pick but there's no valid or reasonable way of doing so for lengths. However, there is for salary.

I'll create a poll and we'll get started once most people have voted.

EDIT: Poll is up.

I'm looking to trade my next season's first round draft pick (potentially unprotected) for a first round draft pick this season.

If I had a late first round pick I'd totally do it cause young guns > established pros for me.

Well cheers for being conclusive, shunts.

If it helps my vote for the third option can be moved to the first option since it was more a vote against the second option than anything.

Okay, I'll call this in a couple of hours. I'll count yours as a vote for the first option Escath.

That'll do. We'll use contracts completely as they are in real life, although for the sake of making it easier for me to manage, all contracts will be rounded to the nearest .0m or .5m.

I really can't be arsed to go through the draft thread deleting all the salaries next to each pick for 120 picks so I'm just going to randomise a new order now. Then everyone gets ~24 hours to get their shit together, sort out any trades, etc., and the draft will start tomorrow.

New draft orders R1-12 uploaded. I'm pretty suspicious of random.org at this point, doesn't seem to be particularly random at all. Copied the team list from the previous R1 order and it returned something pretty similar.

Anyway.. draft will start in ~20 hours, so get pick trades done before then.

... anyone looking to trade down?

I currently hold pick 10, looking to trade up if the right deal can be made.

I might shock some people with my first pick. I honestly hate being pick #1
