NRL player jumps fence to flee from drug test

    July 28 2002

The MacDougall family is embroiled in ano drug controversy after Scott MacDougall fl Australian Sports Drug Agency officials afte first division rugby league match yesterday

MacDougall, brother of Newcastleand Test winger Adam and Northern Eagles' Ben - w were both suspended after returning positi drugs tests in 1998 - was to be tested follo the Canberra v North Sydney match at Can Stadium.

But the Bears' utility ran from officials, alle jumping a fence to escape before fleeing i car.

MacDougall is expected to face a mandato year ban.

Norths coach Greg Florimo said an ASDAo told him of the incident. "The young lad wa to take a drug test and obviously didn't wa take it for some reason or another and did it," he said.

The ASDA official told Florimo he would lod report of the test refusal with the league o Monday.

The Norths coach said he was shocked by t incident, and said MacDougall was a "very talented footballer".

"I'm very disappointed and very concerned the young lad as well. I'd sayhe's a littlebi confused at the moment. I'd think if you w there to take the test there's obviously som problem somewhere along the line . . . I do know what his next move is."

NSWRL general manager Chris Turner said player involved in a test refusal would be t as if he had tested positive. "The process is the same . . . but in fairness to the player h given 10 days' notice and face a tribunal."

Canberra full-back Mark McLinden scored three minutes to go to secure an upset 38-victory over New Zealand at Canberra Stadi last night.

The Raiders declared themselves back in th playoff hunt with a seven-tries-to-fivewin. Canberra stunned the Warriors early, racin 16-0 lead, before three Warriors tries in 12 minutes had them up 18-16 at half-time.

The story was the same in the second half, Canberra scoring two tries to lead 26-18, t New Zealand appeared to seal the game af scoring twice to be up 30-26.

McLinden was the hero in the final stages, with three minutes to go and Ruben Wiki a further cause for celebration with a last-se try.

I really think the NRL should consider postponing round 1, still don't think Australian sport has recovered from the darkest day in its history.

Well to be fair it makes sense because they were forced to release the original report much earlier than planned because of the Essendon thing. They were only planning on releasing it sometime this month.
