Will be interesting if Bennett coaches again next year. Really disagreed with several selections he made, but NSW butchering their side even more kinda covered for us.
Weird to think Game 1 could only be 6 months away.
For the love of god, do not allow Taumalolo to play Origin. This kind of precedent will ruin the concept.
I'd have no problem with him playing if he hadn't chosen NZ ahead of QLD.
It won't happen, this same discussion was around a decade ago about Sonny Bill iirc. It'd make international footy even less interesting.
I think they want to do it so they can play origin and for Tier 2 nations. But Tonga are in the top 3 international teams, but because they don't have a local comp they can't be tier 1 apparently.
I think if we’re serious about growing the game internationally we have to start letting players represent their heritage at international level and also let them represent the state they developed in at state level. Forget tier 1 and tier 2 nations, just open it up completely.
Over 50% of NRL players are of Polynesian decent, this is an issue that is going to continue to play out for a long time.
You can’t convince me it has anything to do with passion or the meaning it has to players given the status players like Brad Thron, Tonie Carroll & Greg Inglis have held in the arena. Hell the biggest headline in last years origin was 2 players who have openly stated they want to represent Samoa having a punch on. Passion for your heritage and the area you grew up in do not have to be mutually exclusive.
I also find it hard to relate to the argument that it’s a trial for the Australian team because that holds no weight either. The Grand Final seems to be a more relevant trial than the SOO series.
I’ve got no problem with seeing Taumalolo play for QLD given he spent all his teenage years there growing up and is proud to be a Queenslander and then representing his heritage for Tonga on the international stage which clearly means so much to him.
Just like I would have no problems seeing Jarome Luai, Tino Fa’asuamaeleaui and Payne Haas represent Samoa after playing for the respective states that they grew up in and played all their junior footy in.
I've got no issues with the guys like Haas and Tino representing other nations. If they were born here or moved here very young, they should be allowed to play origin. But someone like Taumalolo who has already represented 2 other nations, as much as I'd like to see him help QLD, he shouldn't play, and it would be unfair on NSW if we actually got to pick an entire 17 players who were first grade standard.
Opacic a smokey for Qld this year imo.
I'd take Capewell and Gagai over Opacic. He's lucky that he is competing with about 3 people, he could get a shot. Such an average player.
Capewell might be improved this year without the injuries, but I think he'd get found out at centre if he got another crack there for Qld, especially if Turbs or Latrell get picked.
I think Opacic is flat out getting a run in first grade never mind origin though, I'd be just as likely to get you to see if Maranta was keen for a trot in Maroon.
Capewell got found out last year already. That tends to happen to forwards who get put in the centres. You definitely cant have him marking Turbo.
I still recall Opacic getting hooked during a final for Broncos his defence was that bad. Possibly 2017. Gonna take a lot to change my mind on him being anything other than a squad filler.
Mix of what I want and think will happen.
Not a bad side really. I think Mann would be one to go well in origin
I’m sniffing a Thompson call up here gentlemen
Might make the squad, shouldn't make the team.
Is everyone sold on Cook as a starting dummy half at Origin level? I know he's had some great games but still think his service is pretty average and his running game is less effective against better defences... which Qld seemed to fix up last year.
