    What?

He thinks our forward depth is shithouse.

  3. Magic AJ Parker

It's average at best & that's being kind.

Green did a decent job under Bennett, although you can only read so much into that he could probably turn me into a decent prop & the rest are nothing but potential to go with some underwhelming first grade performances.

Clubs need to have 6 good first grade standard props imo these days, Brisbane fall short in that department and because of that I wouldn't be calling their depth anywhere near good.

Then there's also the issue imo that the prop rotation is very much the same, it lacks a really strong ball carrier. Someone who can make numerous 10+ metre carries. Mcguire, Hannant & Kennedy are all workers. Lack of noted 2nd phase players is also an issue but not huge given Parker is a frequent offloader.

Yeah Brisbane are a bit weird with their props in that their starters, assuming it'll be McGuire and Hannant, are up there with the best in the game, but their bench and backup members are below par. I disagree with Magic to an extent though; Hannant and McGuire are both used to playing long minutes and Parker's general awesomeness supplements the props.

I don't think it's a huge issue for them in general really, unless McGuire and/or Hannant get injured. Their big issues are their halves and their coaching.

    Martin Kennedy 2013 - 140 runs for 1341m - 9.57m per run.

Surprising coming from a Roosters fan.

That along with averaging over 25 tackles a game, most of them from the bench, and I can see why Meninga rates him.

It's actually unsurprising coming from a Roosters fan, even though I rate him higher than the majority of Roosters fans do. If you read most Roosters fans comments on him during his time at the Roosters he doesn't take the hard runs and he's always been considered 'soft', he copped a lot of stick for it. And there is some truth to it, whether it's his injuries in the back of his mind or an attempt to get a quick play the ball he genuinely slows up before the line. GYR or anyone who watched him closely this year will be able to back me up on this. He's not someone who's going to make metres after contact and that's what I'm getting at.

Then you should've phrased it differently. Steve Price was slow, used to pull up before the line and turn to back into the defence, along with all sorts of other goofy shit. Who cares? You can try to wriggle out of your 10m a run comment all you like. The fact that Kennedy can still rack up those sorts of metres when he's not firing on all cylinders certainly bodes well for 2014 in which he will presumably have had a full preseason, (now that your "mail" has turned out to be bullshit).

I can't speak to the claim that he avoids taking the "hard runs" because I honestly haven't watched him closely enough to draw and informed conclusion about that. What I do know is that even when he was moved into the starting side, his numbers didn't just equal his bench stats, they actually went up....to 9.9m per run. That of course doesn't prove he isn't only taking 2nd or 3rd ruck all the time but it does make more skeptical of the claim.

If you're gonna tell me he's no JWH, I can't argue with that. But he is a very, very solid FG back-up prop IMO. His main failing is disciplinary. If he gets that out of his game, and stays fit, there's no reason why he can't challenge Hannant, who is admittedly the better player, for a bench spot in the QLD side. He has two of the main assets for the position. Good metres per run, and usually, quite solid defence.

There's also Thaiday, who'd probably move back into the front row if one (or two?) of the main 3 were injured.

If it were up to some people, he'd be playing there permanently. But yeah, he probably would. Let's hope we don't have to resort to that again.

Magic doesn't like the Broncos so he makes up bullshit sources to help his vendetta, not a big deal I wouldn't pay any attention to him.

In his defence, it wouldn't have been out place in the Player Movement and Rumours thread. Perhaps he should've posted it there but I can understand why you stick it in the dedicated Broncos thread. I don't think he was making it up.

I'm not arguing that Kennedy doesn't have the potential to be a good player because I've backed him openly at times on here he's just not what I'd consider a strong ball carrier at all and those stats don't tell the full story.

All I'm saying is I think Brisbane's top 3 props are all very similar and Brisbane need to compliment the likes of Hannnat, Kennedy & Mcguire with a strong ball carrier. A power runner if you will (if that's better wording), someone who can continually bend the line and earn the team fast play the balls & I don't see any one of their options really offering that outside of possibly Hala who's been disappointing so far.

It's a massive bonus for teams to have variety in their prop rotation, whether it's power runners or some 2nd phase footy. Having the likes of Hannant, Kennedy & Mcguire taking the large bulk of your hitups can lead to some pretty predictable footy and easy pickings for the defence because you know what's coming every time.

    Hence (back to my original point) I think Brisbane's depth in the front row is average at best because;
    1) It offers little to no variety and;
    2) None bar Green are proven in First Grade.

And I never claimed to have "mail", just passing on what he said himself. He thought he'd broken his ankle which he obviously hasn't if he's been named to line-up in the trials this week. Always had a soft spot for Marty and was genuinely shattered for him, thought it'd be of interest to Broncos fans. Wasn't trying to big myself up or anything by claiming I have all the inside mail.

The major question for me concerning depth is can Brisbane endure an injury to one of their starters. I think depending on how Green goes, we can. We don't need 6 FG standard props. No side does, including the Roosters who last year didn't.

Not that I particularly care, but I think you'll find this still qualifies as "mail." It's all good though. I appreciate a lot of the mail you post, and read it knowing nothing is set in stone.

I agree with most of this and pretty much suggested such a thing midway through last year. Brisbane's front line is very predictable.......and lacks serious size and strength. The Canterbury pack monstered us in a game last year and made our forwards look tiny and weak. Similarly dissatisfied after playing against a pack like the Warriors.

Guys like Kasiano, Pritchard, Matulino and Fifita bend and break the line on more than 80% of their runs. Brisbane's forwards are dominated and easily put to the ground.

Disappointing I think, in that he didn't appear to have fully recovered from that horrendous knee injury in 2012. Shoulder surgery prematurely ended his 2013 run. A fully fit and confident Hala, is certainly one Brisbane forward who is capable of breaking through the line.

Steve Price's new halves pairing of Gareth Widdop and Sam Williams were impressive in their first outing in Dragons colours, leading the side to a 60-16 demolition of a combined Illawarra and Mudgee outfit in their first trial game of the season.

The two new recruits were instant standouts in what was an unrecognisable, free-flowing Dragons side that produced 15 tries at WIN Jubilee Oval.

Both Widdop and Williams played 60 minutes each while star fullback Josh Dugan played the first half before being rested. Former Rabbitoh Dylan Farrell bagged two tries, while English import Mike Cooper also got on the scoresheet.

The Dragons led 12-0 after the first quarter, but went on an attacking frenzy in the second, scoring another seven tries - two each to Charly Runciman and Nathan Green - for a 40-0 halftime lead.

The points dried up after the main break with St George Illawarra conceding two tries to one in the third quarter, but order was restored in the final 20 minutes as tries to Williams, Farrell, Kiti Glymin and Green helped the Dragons cross the half-century mark.

Dragons 60 (Green 3, Runciman 2, Farrell 2, Williams 2, Dugan, Ailaomai, Cooper, De Belin, Harrison, Glymin tries) defeated Mudgee/Illawarra 16 (Twist, Brien, Pumipi, Leary tries)

Result doesn't mean shit but at least for Dragons fans sake it looks like Williams will get the halfback spot ahead of Stanley which would've been fucking ridiculous had it happened.

the difference between them vying for the spoon and 8 IMO.

Cows flogged Broncs. Coote played well. Never seen so many fucking people at Dolphin Oval in my life.

Kahu injured his knee again. Man, that's one unlucky guy if it ends up serious.
