Team of the Century reboot

The Herald Sun run an article on Tuesday where Dermott Brereton, Jon Anderson and Mark Robinson debated who would make an updated Team of the Century. They included Ablett, Jr, Madden, Carey and Lockett.

The fans version included Wangeneen, McLeod and Cox as well as those above.

Thoughts? Who would you boot and who would you include?

Why would you make a team of the century in the second decade of the century? This thing is going to have about 30 reboots!

Yeah, the general premise is pretty stupid but it's a good discussion to have haha. It's more best team ever thing. No players from pre 1920 are in the side anyway, so I guess it's still the best team of the last century.

So pre-2000 players are included? They should just call it something else.

Assuming pre-87 VFL players are the only eligible blokes?

B: Bernie Smith - Stephen Silvagni - John Nicholls
HB: Bruce Doull - Ted Whitten - Kevin Murray
C: Francis Bourke - Ian Stewart - Keith Greig
HF: Alex Jesaulenko - Royce Hart - Dick Reynolds
F: Leigh Matthews - John Coleman - Haydn Bunton Sr
R: Graham Farmer - Ron Barassi - Bob Skilton
I: Gary Ablett Sr - Jack Dyer - Greg Williams

Bolded are who I'd fuck off from the side. Don't know a few names there so I can't comment on them.

Why were Matthews and Bunton playing FF? Weren't they midfielders?

Agreed mate, no oversights there probably. Maybe David Dench in the oversights - but Silvagni has him covered. Maybe Mark Ricciuto too? He always gets forgotten in that Hird/Buckley/Voss group.

I'd have Scarlett and Silvagni both in tbh. Fuck off John Nicholls. Dude was a ruckman who also dabbled forward.

I don't think you can leave Silvagni out tbh. The dude killed some of the greatest forwards to ever play the game regularly and I remember him kicking 4 off a wing in one game. Pretty sure he kicked 7 or 8 at full forward one day too. Ridiculously good player.

Such a hard thing to do. Only player I don't think should be there is Nicholls, because of where they fitted him in. Ablett, Lockett and Carey are no brainers, but Hart has to stay and so does Coleman. Coleman could play in a pocket no doubt, but that'd mean moving one of Reynolds, Bunton and Matthews out of the forward line (as I'd have Ablett Sr in over Jesaulenko on the field) which can't happen imo. Madden probably needs to come in tbh too.

Don't think Judd, Voss, Hird, Buckley etc make it tbh.

Thoughts on the best AFL era team?

Off the top of my head:
    Scarlett - Silvagni - Wanganeen
    McLeod - Jakovich - Enright
Ablett Jr - Buckley - Judd
    Hird - Carey - Ricciuto
Ablett Sr - Lockett - Dunstall
    Cox - Voss - Williams
    Goodes - Cousins - Harvey - Pavlich

Reckon I'm forgetting some of those late 80s-early 90s guys. Also think guys like Paul Roos, Craig Bradley and Brad Johnson could command a spot in there somewhere. Thoughts?

Matthews played both positions, was a goal kicking midfielder and a devestaing resting forward. Probably there for team balance, but he would be the best small forward who played anyway. Bunton probably there for the same reason (team balance), but he was renowned for attack on the footy but didn't have elite disposal so he's probably best in there.

Matthews was just a beast. Kicked 900+ goals and won a Coleman.

Lacks Crawford. Him vs Harvey in their Brownlow years were terrific battles.

Ablett, Carey, Lockett, Dunstall, Modra and still managed to kick 202.150. I think his best was 10 in one match.

Can't really fault it. Not sure Enright deserves to be there and a forward line of Carey, Ablett, Lockett, Dunstall and Pavlich is too tall IMO - dump one for Aker, Jarman or Brad Johnson IMO.

Ablett Sr was a flanker and Pavlich gives you depth everywhere. All could play together imo.
