Should the 50m penalty be reconsidered?

?

50m free kick

  1. Keep them exactly the same and have umpires hand them out as they wish

    5.9%
  2. Keep the rule as is, just tell umpires to settle down

    29.4%
  3. bring in a shorter penalty for trivial things, keep the 50 for cuntish behaviour

    23.5%
  4. shorten the 50 to 15-25m for all penalties

    11.8%
  5. whatever skippos thinks

    29.4%

I got pinged for that over the weekend. Didn't know what the fuck was going on and the ump explained it poorly.

Yeah it's stupid. Still get away with my league.

From what I've heard Geelong used to use it as an illegal tactic to block the vision of the player with the ball.

    Looking forward to skippos's views

We used to put two on the mark one on an angle to limit the vision and options, but I'm not sure we used to do that specifically. Might have without realising.

Back in the day they had them. Was a mistake getting rid of them.

All running over the mark/through protected area would be 15m penalties.

Sewell was talking about it on 360, didn't go into specifics.

I think they could safely forget about that at reserve grade south coast AFL level. Our tactics consist of:

    A) Right boys, we know this lot are fit as fuck and quicker than us, let's hold our marks and take our time, work to the leads, be strong in the contest

    or

    B) Right boys, these cunts are fat as fuck and slower than a wet week, let's look to play on a bit more and run them off their feet.

Down here in the 18's we play a rolling fucking zone.

Wouldn't surprise me, they'd have gone into our game plan so much. It's something Thompson and probably Scott would do too haha :p

Yeah, it could be introduced as long as it is clear what is what. Not like this fucking sliding rule. One week they pay it for one thing, and another they don't.

That tunnelling rule has faded out. Even though it is still happening.

Also, the staging rule. I thought they introduced that if you stage for a free kick you could be reported. I don't think i've seen one case...

Jetta or Ballantyne got a reprimand iirc.

There's now an art in drawing free kicks, which is slightly different to staging.

I don't - it's meant to be a serious thread and he's straight out attacking me unprovoked. The fucking cunt.

Nonetheless I'm not going to let the cunt win.

The problem with the 50 metres isn't the serious territorial advantage it gives - it's the inconsistency in the advantage it gives. If I give a 50 metre away in the centre circle, all of a sudden the bloke has an 80% shot on goal. Likewise if I give it away anywhere on my defensive side of that - 90% shot on goal. If I give it away in my offensive 50, it's just in the centre and really, unlikely to have a drastic effect.

If they want the penalty itself to be consistent, then (while in theory it might sound unbalanced)

    - Penalty will always see man on the mark standing on the edge of the centre square so the kicker is 65 metres out - just out of goal range for the big kickers.

    - unless the penalty falls inside the 50m-75m zone, where they're given a free with the man on 50

    - if the penalty occurs inside 50, no territorial advantage occurs - the offensive team just get 'arc'd' around to straight in front for a shot.

I'm aware it's inconsistent - it could end up being a 125 metre penalty in some cases as opposed to 35 in another, but the end result will always be the same which serves as a greater deterrent IMO

And this is why the fifth option is what it is. Eloquently put.

You couldn't have someone punished 125 meters, and someone punished 35 meters for the same thing. That is worse than the current system, at least now its only 50 not 90

  15. Dirk Diggler DM Diggler

Keep it 50m. It's harsh and it's meant to be harsh so you don't do it again.

  16. Skippos SM Morgan

    The difference is though

a 125 metre penalty from full back < a 50 metre penalty from the centre circle

  17. MightyPies DA Alessi

    This.

  18. Youngman JE Harding

Yeah, I understand, but it shouldn't matter where the infringement occurred, the punishment should be the same

  19. Skippos SM Morgan

the 'face value' punishment of 50 metres is the same, but the effect and result of that punishment is so, so different.

If you're gonna go like that though, why stop there? Why not make freekicks in the backline an automatic 50m penalty so they're comparable to those in the midfield? :sarcasm:
