Should the 50m penalty be reconsidered?

?

50m free kick

  1. Keep them exactly the same and have umpires hand them out as they wish

    5.9%
  2. Keep the rule as is, just tell umpires to settle down

    29.4%
  3. bring in a shorter penalty for trivial things, keep the 50 for cuntish behaviour

    23.5%
  4. shorten the 50 to 15-25m for all penalties

    11.8%
  5. whatever skippos thinks

    29.4%

Was reading an article this morning claiming that the 50m penalty really needs reconsidering as it is too harsh a penalty for some of the infringements it is issued for. Especially this season as umpires have apparently been encouraged to issue 50m penalties where necessary to take control of the game.

Was reading that the old rule was a 15m penalty, but was changed when cunning devils like Sheedy realised 15m was a small price to pay for belting a bloke late when he took a mark and it also gave the defensive team more time to get set.

A 50m penalty for something like not hearing the umpires whistle or running too close to a bloke who's taken a mark does strike me as pretty harsh, expecially at grounds like the SCG.

What do you guys reckon? One solution offered was to perhaps bring in a lesser 15-25m penalty for the more trivial infringements and save the 50 serious offenses.

Exactly what you said at the bottom. Shit like running too close to the bloke with the ball after a mark needs to go back down to 15m until it becomes a tactic

Trivial things to become 15m penalties, more cuntish things to remain at 50.

Either stop paying the pointless running through the mark ones or make them 15m penalties.

Would prefer 15m, but todays coaches would exploit it too.

Yeah it would only be a matter of weeks before they were all onto it. Could be a case of sides being warned/penalised the 15m for the first two, then the full 50 given thereafter.

Don't mind that actually. Two 15m then 50m...

    All infringements to be 25m.

I know I'd be inclined to belt a few cunts late after they'd taken a mark if this was the case.

Was watching AFL 360 last night and they reckon Bob Murphy got pinged because he put his hands up as he was running through the mark.

Pretty stupid as that's what 90% of players do to show that they're not trying to impede the kicker.

    just leave how it is.

  13. Shagger PW Adams

wouldn't he still get pinged for running through the mark anyway?

  14. Harps ZAF MacDonald

Shouldn't do that. It draws attention to yourself.

  15. MatthewJay TA Miokovic

Nope, rule was changed over the off-season that if you run through with your hands up you're considered a distraction but if you just keep running you're all good. Most players didn't know this though.
Players are going to have to adapt to it. I did it at least 3 or 4 times on the weekend myself without a second thought.

  16. Shagger PW Adams

    that's shit. Didn't know that.

You get reported for doing that these days, anyway.

Exactly why it's a shit rule. Nobody knows about it.

Keep it the way it is. Once you introduce another rule (15m Penalty) it will just confuse the umpires and cause an uproar. "Why did he give incident x a 15m penalty when he gave incident y a 50m penalty"

Game is full of bullshit calls/decisions as it is, tbf.
