Should teams in a premiership window consider signing ageing stars from weaker clubs?

Would've thought you'd just be delaying the inevitable by doing that.

If those teams are in 'Win Now' mode then yes what ever is best for the club.

Talking about sides who expect to be thereabouts in the final week of September.

Would be a massive risk for clubs like Richmond, Carlton, North etc

Ahh I see what you're saying. Probably not a bad tactic, although I don't really know enough about how the AFL trading works.

To get one of these aging stars would they have to pay a fee to their existing club? Or just just give a late draft pick or something?

If they're retired and been de-listed they could be signed as free agents. In the case if GWS, Port and Brisbane demanded a trade for 'retired' players. Only had to give up pick 70 odd so nothing much.

Could also wait until the pre-season or rookie drafts as demand isn't high for these blokes.

And nah, in AFL you never have to pay another club to 'buy' a player.

Of course, if there's a hole. Geelong needed a ruckman and traded for McIntosh for example. If we hadn't I'd be surprised if we hasn't chased someone to sign as a FA.

Looking at guys older then HMac and Lake.

Talking about duders with 1-2 years left that are being pushed into retirement.

Yeah, and I'm saying if we hadn't gotten him we'd have looked at those blokes.

I thought it was pretty obvious that clubs would do it. They do it now.

Lynch/Hudson to Collingwood. Lake to Hawthorn.
    Rivers to Geelong.
    etc.

Not talking about 27 year olds.

    32+

I've always thought this was a great tactic

    Rivers was gone at Melbourne.
    Was still 'ageing', tbf.

No he wasn't. He was one of there better players.

28 isn't ageing, could easily play another 3-4 years.

    28 isn't young..

Obviously, Collingwood did it with Leigh Brown - it worked a treat.

It is the same thing as club resurrecting players careers, no matter what age.
